My girlfriend is in the market for a laptop that will act as a portable graphic design station. We just don't know exactly where to start for a laptop search. The primary applications will be photoshop 7 and Illustrator 10

Requirements:
AT LEAST a 16" screen (preferrably 17")
at least 2 USB ports and a firewire or USB 2.0 port
NOT a mac. The new spiffy Mini-Me macs are nice, but that would require purchasing all new software
Higher end processor (meaning not a celeron or duron)

These are the only requirements. Cost, size, battery power, peripheral devices, hard drive, and memory do not matter at all (although it would be nice to have the best stuff for the lowest price)

So, who's up to the challenge to find me a laptop?

Also, it would be great if the laptop came from someplace that offerred a very good warranty. Since I can't exactly fix busted hardware on a laptop, the warranty will likely be needed.

Sony VAIO, there is something about their screen clarity and viewing angle that just looks better to me.

However, to each his/her own, so go look at laptop image quality and decide for yourself. I went to Fry's and looked at the SXGA and UXGA versions and surprisingly the SXGA VAIO seemed to look better, especially when you made punctuation marks such as " ' " or " ; ", etc...

P.S. I especially like the GRV series.

Dell has some laptops that fit that descritption, I believe it's the higher end Inspiron line, and they can come with a three year full coverage warrenty.

monitor isn't big enough.

I stopped over at a Gateway Country and they said they would have laptops with 17" monitors out in about a month. We're probably going to wait till then.

Yeah, you're right about that one, but the new Inspiron 8500s come with a 15.4inch UltraSharpTM WUXGA LCD screen, which has a native resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. A resolution like that makes up for the loss of an inch or two in the diagonal of the screen when compared to a 17".

She wound up getting a Sony laptop with a 2.2Ghz P4M,512 DDR, radeon 7500, and a 16" SXGA screen from Frys and got a 3 year warranty.
