If i setup a Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM w/ 8MB cache as the master on the primary IDE channel. And use an 5400 RPM Maxtor drive as the slave on the same IDE channel. They are both have the same transfer speeds ATA-100.

Performance loss compared to what?
What is the other option.

The setup you specified will have performance loss only when using both drives simultaneously (copying from 1 the other) compared to being on separate cables.
When using only 1 drive it will not have any performance loss.

You won't see any performance loss, because the combinded Max output of both drives doesn't equal 100MB a second, which is the max for that IDE channel.

There will be some performance loss, as the IDE/ATA spec doesn't allow for more than 2-deep command queuing (sp?), so it can't talk that effectively to more than one target.

This isnt SCSI ;)

You won't notice any performance loss. If anything your CPU will take a bigger hit than anything else in the system. Just make sure you enable DMA and all will be well.

When transferring to/from both drives? One drive alone won't feel it, but when you get both going, they're bound to slow down a bit.
