Question new Athlon.. .need help PLS

Ok, guys... I have a Biostar M7VIT Pro MoBo with an Athlon XP 2400+... I just ordered a "Barton" 2800+... the Barton, as you all know, has the 333MHz FSB as opposed to my 266 on my 2400+. I was looking through my MoBo manual and there is a jumper on the MoBo labeled JCLK1. I looked it up and it says it's the CPU Clock Selection jumper... there are settings in the manual for 100, 133 and 166. When I put in the new Barton CPU with the 166MHz FSB, will I need to change the jumpers there? I have oc'ed my processor to 143MHz without changing it so I really don't know.. please help

thanks

Yes, set it to 166 for Bartons.

But you need PC2700 RAM to do 166 FSB.

PC2100 RAM overclocks from 133 to low 150s at the most for average PC2100 sticks. So you can't do 166 with PC2100 RAM.

You'd have to underclock for Bartons if you have PC2100 RAM.

no i currently have all PC2700 DDR333 RAM in my machine... it's downclocked to match my 133MHz 2400+... but I definately need to change that jumper? hmmm... perhaps thats why in my BIOS i can only OC the FSB to 165MHz... to go higher, i need to change the jumper... ok makes sense... thanx

if my MoBo says it only supports up to 333MHz FSB, does that mean that once i put in my 2800+, I won't be able to OC the FSB any more than 166MHz? Geez, i hope not

You should be able to go somewhat past 166, but don't expect 200. The KT400 chipsets I've seen crap out around 175-180 FSB because of PCI overclock issues.

yeah I didn't expect to go much over 166... due to the PCI and AGP bus issues... I just wanted to be able to do like 170-175... is there any way at all to overclock my CPU without having to get one of those unlock kits? Other than lightly modifying the FSB?

At those timings you'd be better off with a lower FSB and tighter timings.
