I'm researching possible CPU choices for a new build and these 2 processors have caught my eye. The Mobile 2500+ seems like a super great deal as is the A64 3000+. I'm just wondering how do they compare in performance given typical overclocks? My primary concern is MPEG-2 and XVID encoding and I really don't play games much, if at all. However, overall performance is still important as this would be for a general use computer. So, with that said, anyone care to take a stab at the following?

1. A Mobile 2500+ runing around 2.6Ghz is comparable in speed to an A64 running at ??? Or is it even comparable at all?
2. An A64 3000+ running at 2.2-2.3GHz is comparable to a Mobile 2500+ running at what speed?

More than likely this would be going into a SFF case. The Mobile 2500+ with a Shuttle SN45G or the A64 3000+ stuffed into a Biostar IDEQ 200P.

You really cant compair the two because they are two totally different CPU's...but either way the A64 running default should still beat a OCed 2500 barton...even though both have the 512 L2 cache...the 3000 is still a 64 byte CPU which should still be anywhere from 5 to 25% fast then a 2500 barton in 32 byte computing...

Well, the A64 3000+ is clocked @ 2GHz, as a rough gauge, the enchancements that the A64 core brought should give it a 300-400MHz advantage over the AXP. This is, of course, not accurate in all situations. Like glock19owner said, comparing the A64 & AXP together is not all that possible.

here are some Sandra comparisons to my 2500 mobile oc'd tto 2.607 ghz-

I wish I could compare the two for you, but I've never built or ran on a A64.

itshondo - I just ran my mobile barton against yours using your numbers above (I'm at 13x200 due to my mobo not wanting to go over 200fsb) and actually came up ahead of you in all tests. I found that interesting seeing how your fsb is quite a ways ahead of mine. I'm also only running 1.76v.
