How to secure a Linux box?

If it's just your average home computer or fileserver (as if average homes had fileservers  ), there's not much to worry about. The biggest issues are remote vulnerabilities to things like apache, sshd and proftpd, but those are fixed quite quickly. Other than those, there's not much to worry about. You're always free to go overboard, running nessus, tripwire and chkrootkit every week, and there's even a simple kernel hack that *completely* disables the possibility of LKM loading for the kernel, but there's not much point for a normal box.

Just make sure there aren't any dumb vulnerabilities in your router.
