Hi guys,

Got a new drive the other day, while trying to initialize it using disk management, I was prompt with the option of formating it as a basic volume or a dynamic volume.

Does anyone know how a "Dynamic Volume" is different from a "Basic Volume"?
Is one "better" or "worst" than the other?

Please educate this fool!

No, actually dynamic volumes let you do some more advanced disk management operations without the necessity to power down the system - something more useful in an enterprise setup than at home really.

It doesn't make much difference what you select at home AFAIK, and I would probably stick with basic. If you have a home network over different OS's, you may want to be more careful in your selection. ;)

One thing to remember, with basic disks you can read, even NTFS using software tools, the data on the disks in DOS. If a disk is dynamic, it cannot be accessed from DOS. This rules out the use of most imaging tools for disaster recovery, ie Ghost, Drive Image(for boot drive) and others.
