3-Pin Wire Colors

Got some 3-pin molex extensions so I can hook up my fans to a fan controller, but some of the extentions only have a black and red wire. What is the yellow wire for. I think that it is suppose to be a sensor wire, but I'm not sure. Want to be sure before I go plugging stuff in. Thanks.

Yellow wire is the RPM sensor.
