Thoughts on 6800 GT and 256 or 128?

A friend said he heard bad things about this card, and I wanted to ask around before I spent $300. It's the exact kind of card I'm looking for, but I could definitely do without problems. Anyone know anything?

Also, I've read that 128 mb vs. 256 mb doesn't really matter as games are not really taking advantage of 256 mb yet. Is this true? I'd prefer to save around $80 if I could and get a 128 mb if its not necessary to get 256 mb. Thanks folks!

It is a solid card. I believe the gamer editions (as thats what it is) comes with DDR3 like the GT cards do. Its clock speeds are 350/700 core a bit faster than the standard 6800nu cards. It will possibly softmod giving you 16/6 over the standard 12/5 pipes and vertex shader. These cards seem to overclock well to , I had 3 Leadtek 6800NU cards and they all went to 375-400/850+ You will be happy, next step is a used GT of some sort or a new one averaging about $390+ I may be off a bit as I have not followed the prices of them lately.

Enjoy the card, 128mb cards will play all current games fine having 256 is just an added benefit and if you are not going to be playing over 1280x1024 then this card will more than meet your needs.

Perhaps also consider a BFG 6800 OC at bestbuy I know they had em on for 250 but were out of stock that is some great savings and all you really give up is DDR3 for DDR1 but if you can find at that price you save $80. The 6800nu cards range in price of 250-330, the MSI one is nice as well with a killer software bundle

I was told to go for the GT version of the 6800 over a regular 6800, like the BFG one. Do you think the BFG 6800 OC is comparable to this Asus card, or better even?

this card is better than a normal 6800

it is better but he is still being mislead... the asus 'gt' isnt a real gt... it is just a 6800 non ultra 128mb with some special features so they can charge a little more for it.

If you are gonna buy a regular vanilla 6800nu then look for the cheapest reputable brand. The Leadtek I recommend and the BFG 6800 OC if you can get the deal at BB if still on sale and in stock , the Chaintech AA6800 is alos a good deal as it comes overclocked out of box at 350/770.

I would not spend the money on the Asus , as mentioned above it just has the DDR3 128mb on it and they are charging more for it. The 6800 series is the way to go under or at 300 mark , if you want to drop another $100 then go GT via newegg. But if you buy a 6800nu try to spend under 300, I can point you to a pny being sold at another forum new for $250 shipped

I'm not sure this is true anymore. I think there is a difference when you run Doom 3 and HL2 at high resolution.
