Hey all, i plan on building an athlon 64 2800+ system in a few weeks. I have been out of the loop on what cards are good anymore for hte past year or so. I don't believe in spending $300+ on a video card, so the x800/6800 series cards are not what i want.

I am not sure what WoW engine uses, so i don't know if ATI or Nvidia would be better. I was thinking of getting a 6600gt, or maybe a used 9800pro/xt. My specs will be something like this (not 100% positive, but this is pretty much what i wanna use on my new computer)

athlon 64 2800+
1gig value ram PC3200
80gig sata HD
Don't know what mobo
450ish watt PSU
Undecided on H20 or air cooling atm.

What card would give me the best bang for the buck??

as of now, the 6600gt at $215 would probably be your best course of action.

but then again, I would easily recommend the 6800nu over it, but those are around $270

why are you getting a 2800+ a64, you want a 3000+ or even 3200+ winchester. as for a good card, a 9700(pro) will do ya just fine and its half the price

I think he will be fine with a 2800+, and after all, its almost $50 cheaper! Seeing as you will be going socket 754(939 starts at 3000+), you dont have access to a pci-e motherboard. In which case I would recomend a 6800nu. Faster than the 6600 and 9800, it also has a chance of softmodding into a GT.

Agreed.

I had a 2800+ it barely overclocked to 2.2GHz. my 3000+ winchester cost me $160 and it does 2.6GHz. he will be sorry if he cant afford a few $ more and get the much faster winchester. Its 90nm and dual channel too

WoW is "Built for Nvidia" so it has many of the shader options available for those cards. I would go with the Nvidia suggestion.

cool thanks guys. I will probably get a 6800nu (hopefully i can pick one up cheap on the classified section), if i can't find a cheap one i'll just go the 6600gt route.

btw the reason i am using a 2800+ is because i got it free lol. It came out of a damaged computer from work :)

Than that is the best deal ever :D.

It seems wow is very "shader" intense" so an nvidia card would be better and the 6800NU is a fine choice.

I dont really know how intensive WoW really is. I run it at 1280x1024 with my system and I never really have an client side lag(server side lag, now thats another story ;) )

Even in large PvP my 9700 Pro never really stutters.

But with that said, the 6800 NU would probably be the best choice.

If I were you i'd go socket 939,get one of those combo deals Zip Zoom Fly has with the mobo and processor, its $50 more for a A8V Deluxe mobo and 3000+ processor compared to the 2800 combo.939 is the future for AMD.

I agree with everyone...6800nu.

Its free, thats why hes using it. He's not getting a cpu. But agreed on vid card. nVidia card is the best option with it, and getting the best you can get in the range that you can for the price.

A 66ooGT is almost as fast as a 6800 in resolutions up to 1024x768. If thats your gaming resolution, get a 6600gt, if it is 1600x1200and/or use AA and AF, better get a 6800 with more bandwidth.

the 6800nu has been discountinued in favor for the 6600gt so theres not many around but what about the x800xl for $300? its 16 pipes :)

heh assuming you can find a X800XL ;)

I would personally go with the x800xl but can anyone actually find one right now? I think its going to be a while till we seem them.

Ugh, 1280x1024 just doesnt cut it for me anymore, especially on a graphically non-intensive game like WoW or WC3. You just gotta go 1600x1200. Sweet bliss...
