Due to a recent classifides change, many users have to change their email addresses to point to the email address provided by their ISP. As stated in a classifides feedback thread, many users don't like the service that their ISP provides in relation to email. In my experiences, ISP email services tend to be spam laden and don't function as well as third party alternatives such as Gmail, yet tend to function better than your average Hotmail account. In addition, my college has horrendous email service that makes me never want to trust my campus email address.

However, I thought to ask the question to forum users... do you like, or use, or trust your provided ISP email address? After all, this is the address that you recieve because you are indirectly paying for it, so it should be of the highest quality. Ironically, the reverse seems true (that the provided email address is of a pretty low quality). Of any email provider, I would think that I could trust my ISP or local college to provide excellent service, yet those are the lowest on my list to entrust with my electronic communications. I wonder if the feeling is mutual around the internet... or if it is just me...

Note :: I didn't know where to put this thread, so I decided to put it into Internet, Networking, and Security since it directly relates to the internet, not too much for networking, and also since the issues relating to email often can to security (for identity purposes, in relation to spam and reliability). However, this thread may still not be in the best of places... oh well...

Yes, I trust my email from Optimum Online; it's also my primary email, too. And to be honest, I haven't received any type of spam, or other malicious material (well, okay.. maybe one or two per week, but it isn't bad, at all).

Gmail for stuff thats not critical. Also not worried about spam here.

Zirc.org email for ZiRC staff matters.

Wanadoo email for ... nothing. I don't use it. (ISP).

Uni Email for serious business - paypal/amazon/ebay/Uni stuff/etc

OC-Rev email for stuff to do with a site I run.

Ditto, Optimun is pretty good. Granted there are better services with more features and such, but as far as an ISP email service it ranks pretty high, and I've rarely if ever had a problem with spam, but I'm pretty careful anyway. As long as you don't do anything stupid you should be fine, but even if you do they have spam filters to clean it up. It has quite a bit of nice features too, but the mailbox isn't so big, about 20MB. If you want I can help you set up and account so you can try it out gt24! If you're interested pm me.

Btw, Hushmail produces rather secure email accounts too, but their mailbox is also small.

Well, I used to have a dedicated hotmail before I joined the OCForums. Then I wanted to join, so I got a gmail. I use that as primary right now. Since the classifieds rule change, I called up comcast and setup an email account. But I have it set to forward everything from that account to my gmail, so either way, its a win-win for me :D

My hotmail acct gets like 30 spam a day, my gmail gets zip, as does my comcast.

i like my ISPs email, yea it's got it's spam but my only account without is my gmail and i don't care for some of the rules they use, my hotmail account is for pointless website signups (almost basically to attract spam, ect...its where alot of my newsletters go) and gmail just never gets too much action....i guess i could use it for personal emails to keep most everything separate.

ditto, I use it, because I don't want ever site I go to, to know my email and I check that address like twice a month? I like my isp's, I like using outlook express, instead of having to go on a website.

I've always used my ISP e-mail account.
They use a 3rd party service called Postini that blocks spam and virii, and if either are sent to me, they quarantine it and send me an e-mail notifying me that it's there.
I rarely have to check that online though, maybe once every 3 months or so...very good service!

Oh, almost forgot, it will delete any e-mails sent from those that I list in the "blocked" pull down window, so if anyone does figure out a way around them, I add them the the blocked window and it goes into the trash before it's even forwarded to me

I 'rarely' get any spam in my ISP mail account, maybe one or two a month. I only use this account for family and friends. I have 3 gmail accounts and they rarely get spam as well. A side note, I recently set up Thunderbird for pop access to gmail along with my ISP account and it works very well. Back to topic, my yahoo account, gets the most spam. This is the account I use to 'register' for diff websites. My excite account has a small amount of spam, and my hotmail account gets NO spam, as I use their filters and safe list features, which excite and yahoo don't have. (safe list )

Considering I control the email services, I would say yeah I use my ISP's email. I used to use hotmail etc. for junk mail signup's, but anymore I just create I dummy account do the confirmation and then delete the account :D

Postini is 'OK', as a service provider they are fairly cheap, but the complaints I have heard is that their servers will tend to get overloaded and it will slow delivery by upwards of an hour.

We instead bought a Baracuda appliance, and I have not been happier with any other piece of equipment as compared to it. We are not a large ISP and only do about 25k-30k messages per day of which 90% are spam.

I finally got a Time Warner email address (they initially didn't want to give me one). So, anyways, in the webmail interface, any change that you want to make (like, forwarding your email, a different reply-to address, etc) takes FIFTEEN minutes to be saved into the system. Also, there is no guarantee that the settings will be changed!!!

After about 5 times trying, I finally got the system to accept my foward to email address... for some reason, if you don't put a trailing comma at the end of the one and only address, it is ignored. Irregardless, my email is not being forwarded, it just arrives and sits pretty at my ISP's email inbox around 10 minutes after I send it from GMail and it never gets forwarded to my GMail. Yes, I can send from my Time Warner email address and recieve it at GMail.

So, lovely me gets to have a nice technical support chat tomorrow, another one... which will need every bit of personal data I have just to confirm who I am, and to hopefully be helped out...

Perhaps my area and my state just is backwards when it comes to the internet, I dunno... :bang head

I have my own Email service, It saves me from getting all that spam like my current ISP has. Last time I checked any of the Email addresses from the ISP I had close to 1000 Emails waiting. that makes nearly 100 or so Viagra or mortgage emails every day :D. I usually will delete those, with the exception of the Phishing stuff-I report them.

I can't really say, my mother seems to like it.
[/on topic]

I didnt get one, and now the guy wants 15 Euro to make one for me....I think that's a rip off, and it makes me question the man's ethics. If I didn't have more friends now then I did in the States, I'd curse my parents for dragging me over here....I hope I don't lose calssified priveleges, but I refuse to spend 15 Euro on an e-mail account that should be free.
[/rant]

So, uhm..:)

i do, i use sympatico 2gb of space and 20mb file attachesments, its all done through hotmail type thing :)

I have Adelphiafor an ISP. I have had the same email account for 3 years and I get 1 or 2 spams a day. Thats enough to tollerate. My adelphia email is buggy, inconsistent, and has severe support issues. But I only use it for family, friends, and confirmed recipients. I have a Yoohoo account that i use for everything else. I get 400 junk emails a day, no lie. It is completely useless.

So I got a shiny new Gmail account. Its wonderful, no junk mail, works smooth, 2 gigs of storage. And apparrently I cant use here at the forums now. thanks guys.

As with Roadrunner earlier in this thread, I use Optonline and I have no complaints at all.
BTW, :welcome: to the Forum, Roadrunner!
