not seeing hds

I have a boot drive seagate that works fine,i am trying to add a maxtor as a slave and when i use either the master on the seagate and slave on the maxtor/cable select on both my bios cant see either and the computer wont go past the HP(maker)screen.any suggestions?it boots fine with only the seagate plugged in

with the cable from a cd rom it still doesnt work

ok i got it working with the new cdrom cable and the jumpers set to master/slave.thank you!
