When you burn in a cpu what tells the cpu's speed to go up?? And is the clock speed the only thing that rises on a cpu burn in?

you do, by increasing the fsb/multi or some combination or both.

the idea of cpu burn-ins is too make your chip fully functional at lower volts. Cpu burn ins dont affect the speed directly.

The reason people do this is because lets say your stuck at like 2.7 ghz or something. If you try to raise the speed of your cpu, its unstable, and the easiest thing to do is to raise the voltage to make it stable again. But lets say that your temps are already really high. If you were to burn in your cpu you might get your 2.7ghz clock stable at mayb .05v lower than it was before. This means you have an extra .05v or headroom for your overclock. This might not equate to anything, maybe your just stuck at 2.7ghz. Regardless youll benefit from the lower temps associated with the lower voltage.

Most ppl recommend burning your cpu shortly after you get it, because you can "train" the silicon easier. someppl report improvements on chips that arent neccessarily new. Although alot of ppl see no improvement.

There have been a ton of threads about this lately just search the forums.
