why do people use raid is there something special about it. why dont they just use it like a ide drive? is that not a good idea?

There are many reasons why people use raid and different levels of raid. One reason two drive in raid 0 will offer better peformance than single ide drive. Other reason security in raid 1 if one hard drive fails the other one is a back up.

Higher disk performance and / or redundancy are availiable depending on what form of RAID you use.

Same as how theres something special about always backing up your files and using a faster processor.
