I plugged in a parallel port cable to my laptop to perform Direct Cable connection transfer to another, older, laptop. As soon as I did that, the laptop shut down. Next time I rebooted, none of my USB ports were working and they're not even being recognized by the BIOS. This hard shut down happened to me before when I hot-swapped an optical drive, but everything was working fine after that.

I know I'll probably will have to replace the entire board, I'd just like some ideas what exactly happened.
