dvd subtitle extracting

I'm trying something called "subrip", and it wants me to double-check every 2nd word, just like using an OCR program. Is subtitle extracting really that time-consuming? I thought subtitles were just stores on a dvd as text?

DVD subtitles aren't stored as text, they're stored as images in idx (index) and sub (image) formats. To create an srt (text) format, you have to go through character recognition to set the matrix for which it references.
