Good news.. It will also reimburse people who paid for repairs after its 90 day period warranty was up since they extended it to a full year.

Wow, 1 billion smackers, heh.

Serves em right for not addressing the issue sooner and the whole kissing customers butts thing is nice too, no matter how insincere it is, lol.

Thats one thing they've done right this go around that the other two companies haven't figured out yet; take you hits and lick your wounds instead of making excuses about what gamers want or will do when you screw up.

Hmm, well the article I read states:

"Microsoft will pay for shipping and repairs for three years, worldwide, for consoles afflicted with what gamers casually call "the red ring of death." Previously, the warranty expired after 1 year for U.S. customers and 2 years for Europeans."

http://www.comcast.net/news/index.jsp?cat=GENERAL&fn=/2007/07/05/707571.html&cvqh=itn_xbox

Personally I don't think Microsoft should be congratulated for finally doing this. A buddy of mine has spent at least $100-150 in gas and extended warranty's since he got a 360 on release day. Add up the price of games and replacement consoles, and he has dropped well over $1,000 on Microsoft's console, not including the initial cost of the console itself.

I'm just flat out not prepared to do that, and wont buy a 360 until they come correct. Granted games are expensive, but dropping another $150 just to deal with Microsofts shortcomings is abusrd.

At most, in close to the two Ive owned this PC, it has cost me $300 in games and maintenance. A new PSU, at $175, and a few games.

Well Comcast has a way of mucking things like this up so don't take it to heart just yet. If its true though, its good news for you guys. :)

1 QUESTION - Does this cover me as well as in Uk, US infact everyone around the world cause it's a known fact that these new things only happen in the US first. I mean in the UK I don't even think where getting the movie download feature cause the Copy protection people ITC are against it.

And I might sell my current one when the 65nm versions come out as they'll now make sure that they will have better cooling and better systems.

According to the comcast article that mrgoodkat posted, Microsoft will cover all consoles worldwide.

This is great news though.

Yep, I've got 3 year warranty on my 360 now :D This just shows MS cares about their gaming division and the customers not just the $$$$ If SONY had did this with the PS1 and PS2 then I would've never went through 3 of each and would have no hatred against them today.

Good news. Still not going to get one until 65nm, drice drop, or September (Halo 3).

Yup I've been in the same boat....it's like I've waited this long makes no sense to run out and buy one before anything gets changed now...but Halo 3 release will be difficult to not buy one for.

If you read a couple of the articles closer, MS has said the problem is fixed now with engineering changes on new units being sold. Whether this is the additional GPU heat pipe or 65nm is anybody's guess. Somebody is going to have to find one with a June or July 2007 production date and bust it open. Give Arstechnica a week or so and we'll see it.

Also, want to clear another thing up: After reading an interview at 1Up.com with Peter Moore, the ONLY issue that the 3-year warranty covers is the red-ring-of-death. My problem with the dead DVD drive would not have been covered :(

I kind of figured that might be the case, but to be honest none of the people I know who own 360's have had any issues with the drive. Aside from it growing louder over time, which you would think might lead to failure, but it hasn't in these cases.

The Elite has a new drive doesn't it? Do you think the plan is still to phase out the 'white' 360's with the Elite? Does that really even make sense to do with the HDMI 1.2 and the fact its doesn't contain the 65nm? Is it possible the the Elite was poorly executed stop gap measure to quickly phase out the problematic and costly original 360?

Perhaps a updated Elite console with all the goodies we are looking for by Christmas '08?

am I asking too many questions?

1. A lot Elites come with the Benq DVD drives. My Elite has the Benq and it's perfect in every way - no chewed or scratched discs and it's much quieter than my premium console.

2. HDMI 1.2 is more than fine. My games look a bit sharper and my HD DVD sounds and looks as good as it ever did.

3. The Elite was created because there was a market for HDMI and a larger HD. Microsoft merely gave the people want they wanted. I also positive that they used an Elite as an opportunity to right some wrongs with the earlier consoles - I think my Elite is better built machine by far.

4. Yes, you are asking too many questions :)

I agree the BenQ drive is alot quieter, but are you sure it is the solution to not having any scratched discs?

I'm fairly sure I have the samsung drive and I've never had scratched dics. Then again, I haven't used it beyond 500 hours (let alone 100 hours), either.

I'm just curious and I pray my 360 doesn't kill off my game library...

Here's is the official open letter from Pete Moore at Microsoft just thought I'd post it to read from his own mouth on the 3 year warrenty.

Sounds like he cares about customer relationships.

I forget to add the link like that al the time, lol.

Copy it and forget to paste it.

I second that. He cares about customer relations like any good business should (not to be confused with caring about customers because we all know he is not our buddy and isn't going to throw us a bone without motive). Action sooner would have been nice, but its certainly better than never and the retroactive refunds are a nice touch.

LOL

Open Letter From Peter Moore

To our Xbox Community:

You've spoken, and we’ve heard you. Good service and a good customer experience are areas of the business that we care deeply about. And frankly, we've not been doing a good enough job.
Some of you have expressed frustration with the customer experiences you have had with Xbox 360; frustration with having to return your console for service after receiving the general hardware error message on the console.

The majority of customers who own Xbox 360 consoles have had a terrific experience from their first day, and continue to, day in and day out. But when anyone questions the reliability of our product, or our commitment to our customers, it's something I take very seriously.

We have been following this issue closely, and with on-going testing have identified several factors that can cause a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights on the console. To address this issue, and as part of our ongoing work, we have already made certain improvements to the console.

We are also implementing some important policy changes intended to keep you in the game, worry-free.

As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge—including shipping—for three years from the console’s purchase date. We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. In doing so, Microsoft stands behind its products and takes responsibility to ensure that every Xbox 360 console owner continues to have a fantastic gaming experience.

If we have let any of you down in the experience you have had with your Xbox 360, we sincerely apologize. We are taking responsibility and are making these changes to ensure that every Xbox 360 owner continues to have a great experience.

This will take a few days to roll out globally, and I appreciate your continued patience as we launch this program. I've posted an FAQ that should address some additional questions, and we'll update it over the next few days.

I want to thank you, on behalf of all us at Microsoft, for your loyalty.
