i need to tranfer music and movie files from winxp protower to my laptop with vista..can you tell me the best, easiest, fastest way? i was thinking to just run a usb cable ...if i could im still unsure of how to do it:confused:or any good websites explaining how to do it would help also,,,thanks

Simply allow the Sharing of the source folder and then 'map' a network drive from the remote(Vista)PC. Either wired or wireless.

You can do it a few ways:

As noted above, access the data over the router, wired or wl, assign static IP addresses etc.

Use a crossover cable. Probably not much faster than USB. http://forums.techarena.in/windows-vista-network/1064125.htm

USB cable. Easy, but slow.

Burn it all onto a disk. (I'm guessing you already thought of this and rejected it.)

If you have an external SATA port on your laptop, a great way would be to disconnect the HD SATA cable on the source computer, and just plug it into the laptop's external port. Then transfer the information HD to HD. Fast and easy.

i am not sure why you would think that a crossover cable would be slow. it is a direct connection between the two computers using the network adapters. if both computers have gigabit network adapters, it will run at gigabit speeds. but if they are already connected both over wireless, you can just map the drives just the same.

slowest to fastest
usb < wireless < crossover cable

one thing is that on your windows xp computer, you will want to make sure that ntlmv2 is enabled:

http://www.vlerick.com/helpdesk/our...able_secure_authentication/ntlmv2_xpprof.html

that is one common problem when trying to share a folder with vista.

wired would be ideal, wireless will work, and will be faster then USB but would be slower then wired

thanks for all the ideas,,looks im going with the crossover cable:),,,,guessing i can get it radioshack

You should be able to get it at RadioShack. Be careful what cable you get though. It looks the same as an ethernet cable, but the wires are switched. If it were me, I'd create a network share and do it over the wireless network. It's not terribly fast, but it'll be almost finished by the time you got back from RadioShack ;^)
