Can someone recommend me a good bang/buck home theater system (custom or bundled)? This recommendation is for a friend and I really don't know much about speakers/subs and setting them up for optimal audio quality, so I thought I would ask here.

There is no budget, there just has to be justification for a higher price (i.e. is it really going to make a difference?)

OK what would be the best for $500 and $1000 for a 14x14 area, and could you really distinguish the difference between the two?

so were talking more `budget` system thats worth the effort for a 14x14feet room?

im going to play my `Bose` card for the second time this evening.

amp (carnt help much here only know UK market and theres always an import premium)

or the complete bose package.

for the approx budget there may be better prices for similar equipment made nearer home... but I have heard the bose and there an impressive technology such a big image from a tiny tiny foot print... there the way to go for a relatively small room.

maybe pick a price range for the amp and post a thread... I just dont know whats in your home market.

for $1000, I would say Mirage nano/omni sat, Klipsch quintet, or DefinitveTech ProCinema, or Energy (take classic, C-50, RC-Micro), or AV123 are some very decent entry level book shelf speakers. pair them w/ a Denon/Onkyo/Yammy AVR, and you/your friend will have a decent low end setup! ;)

p.s. I would stay away from Bose tho! it's just some overpriced well known name cheap speakers! remember: "no highs, no lows, must be Bose!" :p

mixed to negative opinions elsewhere on the bose - seems the price has gone up and up then up some more overseas.

at least youve got plenty of home grown options now :)

may there home AV be an involving and un-fatiguing one that lasts a deacade and half.

#note to self Bose are rubbish!# - oops.

Check out ascendacoustics.com for speakers. Five HTM-200SE speakers (~$700) with a ~$200 Harmon Kardon receiver (or Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo) and a Dayton 12" sub (~$150) will give you an amazing budget HT setup. Compared to a home theater in a box that costs $500, it will be vastly superior in every respect. Other brands to look at (for speakers) would be av123 and axiom audio. I've owned Ascends and they are neutral and for the money, IMO, cannot be beat. Of course, everyone likes different qualities in their speakers, so check out a lot of different options before pulling the trigger. Best of luck!

There are many new budget systems out there that are getting good reviews. One is Premier Acoustic and another is BIC Acoustic. You may also want to look at the Klipsh Synergy series. I have a Synergy system and I have always liked the bright sound they put out for home theater. It's not for everyone. The BIC's emulate that sound at a lower price point.

I strongly suggest you look at the AVS Forum. They have many threads like thjis brimming with ideas.

Good luck with it.
