Hi I am currently on the market to purchase 1 GTX 580 GPU and get a second one in the future if i have too.

I would like to know weather or not its worth picking up the 3.0 or 1.5g versions.

I play competitive games on a 22 inch but also play a lot of my eye candy games on a single 46 inch 1080p LED and would like to know if getting the 3g is worth it or not for me.

At 1080p there is likely to be minimal difference. With AA turned up then there might be a slight difference, although it it unlikely to be noticeable.

If the price difference is small then go for the 3GB model as it will be more future proof as well as being better for SLI if you decide to go down that route.

1.5gb unless 2560x1600, 2560x1440, or 120hz monitor. I like the MSI Lightning, the ASUS Matrix, and the ASUS CUII.

Ok so lets say I wanted to play Nvidia 2d surround with 3 monitors would 2 gtx 580 1.5 be ok or should I put the extra 100$ for each card and make them 3g or will it make really any differnece...

Depends on the game.

I was playing BF3 beta with 2x580 1.5 and it wasn't fluid.

If you are going triple monitor, you can go 2 x 580 3GB or 6990+6970.(I just bought the 6990+6970 and will compare once I get back from vacation in a week or so)

I wouldn't recommend the 580 1.5 for that. Heck, you can even go with a couple of 570 2.5 GB

How much of this could be attributed to beta vs retail, or to non-optimized drivers? I find it hard to believe that 580SLI won't pull it off... although with 3 monitors, the extra RAM WOULD be helpful, especially if they're going to be anything over 1920x1080.

Heck of a setup, either way!

It was pretty damn smooth on the rig in my signature at 1080p with all the graphics options turned up to the max. Not quite a consistent 60fps, but usually between 40-60fps.

I'm sorry. I failed to mention that I was running 5760 x 1080. It was ok in some instances and then would drop a bit on a couple occasions.

you definitely have some valid points here. We won't truly know until the game releases and normally, they run better than beta.

1.5GB = 1920x1200 or less.
3GB = 1920x1200 and higher (meaning running more than one display, or large 30" panels with 2560x1600 resolution).

Look into the non-reference GTX 580's for uber awesomeness, such as the Asus GTX 580 Matrix, Asus GTX 580 DCUII, MSI Lightning GTX 580. Reference cards are excellent as well. A GTX 580 is a GTX 580 and it will not disappoint.

Simple as that. :)

Reason why I shelved my 1.5GB GTX 580 and got a 3 GB, want to make sure I have a smooth BF3 experience with all the eyecandy:comp:
