Hi!
I run by accident in a thread on the nvidia forum. An user was complaining that even if he was setting up the maximum details with surround, he cudn't see a big difference to the lower detail settings.

It appears that he found out that the driver can override the game setup to mantain high fps.

This is why in some reviews they had more fps on surround that on one hd screen.

Has someone of you that bought the 680 noticed it?
What do you think about this?
Can it be true?

Im sure a driver could do that but, i find it highly doubtful that Nvidia would chance pulling off something like that with the scrutiny that reviewers and the competition put there cards through.

What driver revision?

Nvidia certainly could, the initial reviews are all from review sample cards that shipped with drivers for them.
Now there have probably been new drivers released that could contain that behavior.

Did nvidia do that? I'd be surprised, but not shocked. This is the company that showed us a "fermi" that was a bandsawed PCB held together with wood screws, after all.

things like this have happened in the past, but there needs to be solid proof

My benches clearly show the expected amount of details and performance drop for each level of detail etc.. Even then, level of details make almost no difference, its the HBAO and MSAA that really take a hit. I would have to test the surround vision however. I would assume that there is an "override" on the surround that might be defaulted so the drivers take over (force certain details/AA/AF/TXAA etc..), but usually nVidia has everything default for the application.

hello tank you for the replies, I've been following this thread with my mobilephone.

I wonder to hear some gtx 680 owner.
If he got some time between a match and oneother

What review had multi-monitor out performing a single monitor with the same settings? Can u link it?

I have a 680 and 2560x1440 monitor do you want me to take screenshots at low, medium, high, ultra?

I fee like looking at still images between the different settings would not make difference to the eye.

While playing I can def tell the difference between no AA, 2Xaa, and 4Xaa.
I can see a difference between post processing settings also.

Shadow between Low and Ultra is night and day.
Effects and Mesh between Low and Ultra is night and day.

For me I can def see differences between the settings WHILE playing.
Ya looking at the images they look exactly the same at the Nvidia site.

Call me anal...but I can see the differences for sure. :-/

Thats peculiar... as one *should* notice the differences MORE in a still frame vs motion...as you have time to analyze the photo vs rapidly moving frames that are different each frame.

I run at full ultra, took some screenshots of LOW and Ultra and can tell a difference, especially in shadows. I will post up the screenshots and cuts I took from them to show the difference. Outside of that, there isnt much difference at all.

tank you for your replies, I think screenshots are welcome, and why not why if someone has a 7970, to compare these with it.

You help us to choose the next card ;) and why not have a talk about these technology monsters.

I'm sorry I don't remember wich review had more fps with ultra, I've seen so many of these...

It didn't happen...

I'm using now 2 gtx 680, and... installing the new drivers...

i can't max out crysis 2 on surround, have way too low fps and stutter.

These cards have not enough ram.

But about the details, I can tell trees where more detailed on my 2 6870 in high res.
now I can't distinguisch the leafs, if these are not very close. Then yes i do have good details.

The average quality disn't change a lot going from high details to ultra.

The tesselation did change, with high was very poor.

I go on with the driver install

Pictures please showing the difference (not movies).

I'm quite pissed off...
sorry if I start in this way, but I just spent a lot of cash for 2 cards that are not reaching the goal, and I was thinking to take the better one, instead of the 7970.

Furthermore, I saw so many reviews, I thought these were exaustive, and these aren't at all. It's more an advertising for brands.

2 gtx680 arent'enough for playing on surround. If you don't care about stuttering, fps drops, and you don't care about having good graphics, take 2 middle range cards, and play with lower resolution, as I was dooing. I played with 2400x900 on 3 screens, everything was everytime fast. It was with 2 6870.

I pretend that this is a work that websites do, the acclaimed one for dooing reviews. And not only show numbers, but pictures in FULL (f*cking) RES, show video, give links for video to download, if youtube isn't good.

At least my thoughts were in most true.

I see you won't be able to see the image in full size unless you download it or have 3 screens.
So I'll have to do some work to cut images....
Thank imageshak.us for not giving a zoom function on pictures.

Here it is on high (the lovest possible always with dx11 and high res texture pack)

This is a randomly taken screenshot, I hope and think it was on "high" settings becouse it isn't exceptional

The worst I see is the stuttering, and a delay by the focus of the image on the movement.
So if i turn, it takes a little while for everything to be on focus.

I cudn't play well on high settings with dx11 and high res texture pack.
The image was ok with half size maxed to full screen. So if playing with 2 6870, i had the image downsized by 3 to play, with 2 680 I have it downsized by two.

This is absoluteli not sufficient for the money I just spent.

Is it possible to tell us VRAM usage on your 680's? You can use MSI Afterburner or GPU-z I am sure you know :p
I am curious much VRAM you use. Probably maxed out.

3 times 1080p monitors I am sure requires insane hardware.

EDIT: Also rest of your system specs please.

Hi the problem is, I don't see it playing, I knew it's possible, but didn't do it yet.

Sorry if I might not do it.
Unless you tell me how to save the reports to a file, I'm editing screenshots for now, and in 6 hours I must wake up &go to work.

I have also some "interesting" video, just 4 gb for 2 minutes. I took it in half size and it wasn't playable. It would be just to see me getting kicked.

but if you wanna see some onlineplaywithfury tooken with the glorious 6870 twins check this vid:

I suggest start at minute 10+- and zap a bit.

by the way...

Here is a comparison between the ULTRA AND the HIGH graphic details in crysis2.

as you can see the image is not smooth, the nature is unfocused

I'm still not satisfied... working on it to show you the difference, or the big similarities between the 4 graphic settings

By the way, the install went very good, in 30 minutes I had surround setted up and everything configured.

Now I played a bit, the most that disturbs is a delay by the image on getting clear.
With everything maxed out on 5900x1080 there was also a very noticeable delay on the movement of the image, giving heddeache. Like if i turn, the image turns 60-250 milliseconds later. Unpossible to use.

I went on the high settings and still It wasn't smooth, and even not with a resolution of 3600x700. But the fps were apparently good, 60-90/sec.

I suppose I get it fixed by going to dx 10, and/or disabling the high res texture pack.

Exactly the same as with the 6870 in crossfire.
