I'm planning on moving my G4 into a larger case so I can drop in more drives, and sooner or later the stock power supply (250w) is going to run out of juice.

This is the layout of the connector on my mobo:

As you can see, it requires two 25V lines. all the other volt requirements I can splice or move, and I can hack the connector to get it to the right pin count.

Is there a psu that has a 25V wire? or can i hack an existing one to get it? Or would I be better off with a dual psu setup?

I assume this is a standard ATX PSU but with 25v line. Have you thought about adding a second standard ATX PSU just to supply your drives and leave this one to supply the rest, probably need to mod your case to mount it - unless you get a case with dual psu capability.

There have been many posts on in this forum about adding an extra psu and coupling them together so that they turn on together, usually involves connecting the "power good" and/or "power on" sense lines together.

The MAC PSUs are definitely not ATX with a 25v line. Best bet for info is to find a MAC hardware site and see what you can come up with. Doesn't look like a dual setup will help you here. As I know absolutely nothing about MACs, can't help you out.

i've already been though the Mac community websites for hacking machines, and haven't found anything to help me with this psu.

The older mac psus were basically ATX units. you can hack an ATX to work with soldering two leads. the new ones (which I have) have this confangled 25V line.

This guy did what i'm doing but used the original psu. I wrote him and he really had no idea how to get something other than the stock psu to work.

all the other stuff I found was in the service source manual for my G4.

I think the dual psu could work. it's no actually supplying power to the mobo so i'm not in any danger of frying my mobo, right? using the method at http://www.commongrounds-pc.com/Articles/dualpsu.html seems like it should work, using my stock psu as the main psu.

Right now, all this is conjecture, the stock psu is working okay. It's a year from now when I throw in a DVD burner and and a couple more hard drives that I'm worried about.

As long as the second PSU will not be doing anything involving your motherboard, you should be safe doing the dual PSU setup, as it won't have anything to do with the 25v line.
