The first models are specced with 900Mhz GDDR3 and 825Mhz core; that suggests that they'll be slightly slower than a pair of individually paired 3870's...

The card runs run over a pair of 3870's in a CF like a freight train.

Edit - Whoops wrong card lol.

Given the details we currently have, I don't see how. Two RV670 cores, clocked at 825MHz versus 775MHz. Two sets of memory chips, clocked at 1800MHz versus 2250MHz.

And if you're going to tell me it's ALL because of some newfangled link between the two chips, I call bullocks. It's quite obviously (and well proven now) a standard PCI-E 1.0 switch chip that connects the two; bandwidth between the cores on a 3870X2 board is no better than it would be on a CF'd pair of 3870's that use the bridge connector.

The only place the 3870X2 card has a leg up over a pair of individual 3870's is core speed, and not even by 10%. Furthermore, any driver optimization they've done to get the 3870X2 card going faster will equally apply to the existing set of CF 3870 and 3850 users out the world.

Now that I might believe  but I'm still curious if the extra performance of the 9800GX2 is going to overcome the rumored pricing. I guess we'll all know in a few more weeks!

Yeah, that's along the same lines as what I read. For $700, it damned-well better run over the 3870X2 like a freight train

But for $700, I'd probably just say "Eff It" and buy two 3870X2 cards and go nuts :bday:

$700 is what I read for the 9800GX2. Not worth the extra $250-300 in my opinion. But hey, thats just my opinion.

Get a new calculator GR.

Actually I think it is going to be around $650. A pair of 3870's will cost ya around $500
but they are only 512Mb cards too. 9800GX2's are 1Mb per card.

Well if you snag 2x 3870s from the Best Buy deal, thats $220 apiece. So thats $440. The article at the top of this thread said $450 for a 3870x2. So still you're looking @ $200 more for the 9800GX2.

However the fact that with the 9800GX2 you're getting 1GB of usable video memory vs. the 512MB of usable video memory from the 3870s, and that the 9800GX speeds are faster might make that extra $200 worth it for some people. Myself, well I can't ever afford to drop that much on ether of those cards in the first place

It come down to the resolution you are gaming at. If you are running 1900x1200 with AA or higher you want the larger memory. Another simple fact is most users do not begin to have the system speed behind CF or SLI setup to scale all that well.
