Back before the surge of LCDs, my dad bought a $400 19'' KDS (yeah they suck) and got a warranty plan. It croaked twice and each time he brought it back and exchanged it...sometimes getting a newer/improved model of it and there was no issue. Although I dont remember if he bought the warranty each time, probably did.
The plan being for the item itself and not the purchase makes sense to me...which is what I initially thought when reading this post also.
