I’m looking at swapping the cpu on a Centrino laptop, however I have no idea what the compatibility issues are between the various sockets and packaging types. Anyone up on this?

Dothan seems to be either:

478 pin PPGA or
479 pin H-PBGA.

whilst Banias on the other hand is:

478 pin PPGA FC-PGA2 or
479 pin H-PBGA FC-BGA2 or

This info is taken from:

Is it possible to swap out a Dothan S478 PPGA with a Banias S478 PPGA FC-PGA2 and vice versa? I’m assuming here that the BIOS support is in place but wondering how the different packaging effects cpu and heatsink installation!

Help appreciated.

you dont want to replace a dothan with a banias chip..the dothan is better due to the Lv2 cache(which is 2mb)
