I am going to be doing a fresh install of Win 7 next week as I've had the install for about 2 years now and once done with drivers/security updates etc, I would like to create an image of it to my 500GB drive but when I open up Back up and restore in control panel and select image my SSD isn't showing.

Your SSD won't show up. You pick a drive you want the backup to go to, and it automatically backs up your system from the C:/ drive.

I think 3rd party imaging tools, like Acronis, are better than Windows' own Back Up and Restore. I bought Acronis True Image Home 2011 and have been using it since. It allows me to make an image of my whole SSD, as opposed to just a partition or partitions. I think there are other free programs like Acronis but I don't know what they are.
