Does anyone own a DSLR camera?

I'd say look into getting the Canon XSi, or XS, you can get the Canon Rebel XS with kit lens for under $500, pair it with a memory card and you'll be set. Don't worry about buying other lenses, batteries, grips, flash, tripods, etc. All you need is your rebel camera with the kit lens, which is the 18-55 IS.

You can definitely learn on it fairly quickly, play with it, walk around town for a few hours and learn how it works. Then do the same for indoor shots. The rebel series SLRs come with an on-camera pop-up flash, which is typically only used for fill light for direct flash, since it is a bit harsh, similar to p&s cameras. To get softer lighting, an external flash does wonders.

But for now, I'd recommend to just dip into the territory of DSLRs with a Canon Rebel XSi or XS. Look at Photography on the Net as a forum, google search "POTN".
