Hi.
here it comes: another problem. ;)
I'm a noob, but after looking around the gentoo forums, I think I've got a feeling what infos could be needed, to help me. Unfortunately I didn't find anyone with the same problem.
System is amd64 (in sig), cflags are -march=k8 -pipe - O2 kernel is 2.6.12-r6
and ati-drivers are 8.14.13-r3
What I did so far after the basic installation was "emerge kdebase-startkde".
After following instructions on how to install the fglrx module I type startx:
The screen turns black a few times and there's only this text:

Problem solved

If you should happen to have the same problem:
I can "startx" as a user, but not as root.

Code:

What confuses me is, that the driver seems to be installed correctly, and there is no single error message in the log file. The fglrx module is installed which I tested with lsmod. so why doesn't xwindows come up?

These are large files, but I thought linux experienced guys know where to search. If someone wants to take a look through ssh, just pm me.
thanks for your time. :)

Try changing driver to "vesa" temporarily to see if it works with that. If it does, then you'll know it's the fglrx drivers.

Also, check what version of the ATI drivers you are using, and if they support the x850. That's a very new card.

using lspci I found my gfx card to be of type 5D52 which is listed as a supported device. You can check scrolling down the last code window with the xorg.log file. All supported chips are listed there.

Could you tell me, how to use the Vesa driver? Do I have to enable framebuffer devices in the kernel, to do so?

It seems as if older versions of the driver had problems with the kernel revision I'm using, but these are gone with my driver version.

Another thing is that some guys need AGPgart support in order to use xorg (using PCie!). But unfortunately I can't select agpgart as a module, because it's sort of preinstalled in the kernel (can't change the setting). Additionally there is no nvidia agp chipset listed.
Using a nforce4 board this seems very odd to me.

The quick and dirty way is to change the line in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file that says Driver "fglrx" to read Driver "vesa". Vesa almost always works, although the special ATI modified config file may bork it.

Another thing you might try is to use the automatic X configuration utility. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it works quite well. Log in as root, type in xorgcfg. It will bring up some graphical panels. Just choose quit at this point, and it will ask if it should write the config file. Choose yes. Then try startx again. Hopefully, it will have autodetected your hardware.

There is also a semi-automatic utility to write xorg config files. This is xorgconfig. It will ask you questions rather than autodetecting things, and you can choose what driver to use. ati or vesa should work, although not as fast as fglrx.

I have little experience with the ATI drivers, as I use nvidia on all my machines. However, I did do an install with fglrx drivers and gentoo on a Dell Latitude. I remember it taking a few hours to get them working, but that they did work in the end. Rogerdugans has done a lot with the ati drivers on this forum, you might want to ask him for help.

I THINK I had a similar error in slackware with my Radeon9550. Not 100% sure it's the same error, but all I had to do was type "startx" a second time and it would load up just fine (I never figured out what was causing that :p).

thanks for your replies so far.
changing the driver to vesa did result in the same. The screen gets black.. I could see the X of the cursor for a moment and then it's gone.

using xorgcfg resulted in instant failure, saying i810 (module for integrated gfx on intel boards) isn't loaded. using xorgconfig didn't succeed either.

Could it be my monitor is on the wrong head? The card has one DVI and one normal connector, which I'm using. Doesn't make sense, as the wrong disply should stay black.
I'll start reading though threads by Rogerdugans about the matter.

edit: and of course I tried startx several times in a row ;)

I've just noticed, only xorg-X11 is merged, while xorg-server is masked and not installed. is this default, or do I have to unmask and install xorg-server?

edit: errmm it seems to work when I'm not logged in as root... hope it keeps working

i810 is the sound module I think, not video. I'm not 100% sure of that though. snd_intel8x0 is the sound module I use for my on board nforce 2 sound.

I have xorg-x11 installed on mine, but portage doesn't seem to know of the existence of xorg-server. Are you sure that's the package name?

thanks for your reply.
I've loaded the snd_intel8x0 module which supports my karajan audio on the DFI.

The Problem seems to be resolved... I have to startx as a user and not as root.
Dont tell me this is common knowledge ;).

All seems well at the moment as I'm starting to install my needed parts for KDE.

thanks for your time and efforts. I'll post here if I happen to run into another problem! :)

It's not quite normal. I can run X fine as root or as my regular login. Interesting that there is a difference. It's likely in one of the .x... files in your home directory, .xinitrc, .xserverrc, or something like that. Note that files beginning with . are hidden when you do an ls by default.

thank you! I'll tackle the problem tomorrow!
Got another hint, that it's just a "bad'" config file:

when I try to login as root using kdm a window pops up telling me:
"Root logins are not allowed"

I wish startx's console output had printed this out before ;).

It's possible it has something to do with the gui login manager restricting root logins. I have never used those login managers; I like to just boot to a command prompt, and then I start X if I want it, so I don't know how they work really.

I didn't find anything in these files, but it isn't important, because I'm not working as root anymore. Thanks for your help.

Gentoo is really fast... when I boot back to windows, I've got the feeling as if it's lagging.
Checking the task manager all the time ;).
Gentoo seems to make very good use of system memory... really nice.
There are still some minor questions, but I'll try to find some threads about it and not to bother you :).

One of the nicest things about Gentoo (NOT true of all linux distros) is that it installs ONLY what is absolutely necessary, and then what you tell it to. This makes for a very fast startup with very low resources used.
