which one should i buy?

the reason:
building a new comp for gaming and multimedia. would love to have a high potential in oc. hope for great performing graphix card, unless there's a better suggestion. hope the ram can support the high oc since i see many people using that kind of ram in the ocdb. looks also matters on the case since i want a good looking case. wait actually nvm but i want a good cold case with extremely good airflow.

the only dilemma right now is that i can't make up my mind between a 4400+ toledo or a single core cpu. do people think it's worth the money to invest in such a system? i have been reading around and i see people with the x2 IHS off getting good clocks. but i dunno how to do such things and i'm afriad as hell to damage anything. but to my knowledge isn't clocking a x2 to 2800 or so meaning two cores of 4000+?

Why don't you split the difference and get an X2 3800?

I agree with Vulcan, also look into getting a 7800GTX and not the 6800 as the prices are close, but the performance difference is big!

Get a different PSU, the Modstreams aren't that great, something like the OCZ PowerStream 520W is a great choice, or a Forton AX500-A is good choice also.

Why not get a 16mb cache HDD?

ThermalTake VA8000BWS Armor $157.50
DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D Motherboard $129.99
OCZ 1GB PC3200 Platinum Revision 2 Enhanced Latency Series $169.00
eVGA GeForce 7800 GTX Video Card $525.00
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Dual Core Processor $372.52

OCZ Technology PowerStream 520W $109.99
Lite-On SOHW1673S Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer $48.50
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus10 250GB Hard Drive $104.99
Arctic Silver 5 $5.95
THERMALRIGHT XP-90C $54.25

Total: $1675

A little bit over your budget, but it's a much better system then the ones you mentioned. Especially since you want a great video card.

maybe i can lower the 4400+ to a 3800+ and then get the 7800gt or gtx for a video card. but seirously i don't game that much. the most i probably go is cs:source or cs or stuff like that sort.

you have a mobo that can supoply alot of vdimm......so why not get ocz gold vx, and hit 250fsb at 1.5-2-3-5?

If you don't game that much why are you getting such a high quality system? If it's for video/audio work then go with the 4400+ but if it's not get the 3800+. Also get the 520powerstream, or the fortron 550, the modstream is not a good powersupply.

the hiper type-r modular psu is an excellent psu, i have it in the 580watt version its so stable and looks neat aswell

why is everyone telling me to get rid of the modstream? any specific reason ti's a bad power supply?

Well I don't know that PSU, but if its cheap, that means they use low quality parts and design. It is a really good idea to stay away from cheap PSUs when you're getting such a power hungry system as that PSU can easily fail and take some of the parts along with it.

damn after reading sucka oc i think i'm going with the 4400+ it sounds nice enough if i can hit about 2.9 that would be awesome. but then again that's on AIR. i'll have to find a way to cool down everything by sorting out all the wires and stuff.

i think i'm going to
4400+ and a 6800GT
shuold be good enough since i'm not oging to be playing much games anyways.

I vote for the X2 Toledo and a very good power supply.

Most of the time in the past, hard to track down problems stems from a insuficient power supply, especially if you are a Overclocker.

You can get a 7800GT with a full version of Battlefield2 for under $400.00
If you don't do much gaming and have to save money, keep the best Power supply and X2 Toledo.
I'm building a system based on this myself in the next 2 weeks.

I like Leadtek or eVGA but just because I have had quite a few of them with no problems. I don't know which ones are faster.

Leadteks are good for the medium OCer, those that don't want to change out the stock heatsink on it, since Leadtek has the best STOCK heatsink. But the eVGA or BFG ones have known to OC a tad better, only by a few points though, but their customer support is great.

Yes, the PSU does make a difference. If you get a bad PSU, it can reflect on the performance of other parts. The Modstream is only a few dollars away from a simple Forton AX-500-A, or an extra $20 for a much better OCZ PowerStream 520W.

If you really aren't going to game much, the 6800GT will do. For multitasking or video/audio encoding, the X2 4400+ is a great choice.

hmmm these posts are pointless, see the one with the fatser CPU, get a good chunk of ram maybe 2GB, a couple or raptor HDD, a good old video card gke a BTX 7800GTX maybe 2 and then you will be set up
