Hi There,
Have recently joined, hope someone out there can help me.
Have a Klipsch pro media ultra 5.1 sub woofer, with no speakers attached it makes a continious schreeching sound, have removed amp from box and ther is a kind of burning smell, seems to be coming from the Bash circuit board area can see no signs of damage anywhere, from looking over internet maybe a capacitor..know next to nothing about this ,trying not to send it half way round world for repair.

many thanks

If you don't know what you are doing, it could be dangerous and you run a high risk of damaging the component further. If you know someone that could repair it locally, that may be a better option. Without a base understanding of electronics, it isn't a good idea to try this yourself.

Many Thanks For your reply, have been looking for weeks for local repair places..no luck.
iknow your right about this,if its just a matter of replacing components i could handle that as i used to solder components at one time way back when, just need to know where to start looking...

is it under warranty? pretty sure the best solution would be to just send it back for repairs

there is a thread here with some good information, as the klipsch amps are apparently notorious for dying http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=502498 and i actually own a dead amp myself. this thread at [h] has a lot of info in it too (as well as a lot of junk posts to sift thru) http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1028862277

If you call Klipsch, they will point you to a 3rd party who does out of warranty work for them. I believe they quoted me $150 for the repair but it's been a while since i talked to them, and i can't even remember the companies name. There is a guy elliot-tronics http://elliot-tronics.com/ who does repairs and upgrades. a lot of people in that [h] thread were complaining that he was taking too long with their amps and not quick to respond to emails so i've been weary to contact him myself.

I sent one to elliot, he does take time but does outstanding work.

yeah i'm contemplating it now. I've had them sitting on my floor for like 6 months now. this weekend I decided to poke around a little more with a friend on the phone who is actually taking a electronics repair class. I ended up blowing the fuse in my room once, and had several POPS and fizzes...so i don't think i'm qualified to be doing this sort of thing myself. Outside of the obviously blown MOSFET, i have no idea how to figure out whats wrong.
