As the title says, my son wants to build his first PC. He has a budget of $1200, and plans to use his Television as a monitor.

The parts he picked out were: pcpartpicker

Basically:

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz 8-Core Processor $295
Motherboard: MSI - X470 GAMING PLUS ATX AM4 $ 120
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 $120
SSD storage: Samsung - 860 Evo 500 GB 2.5" $78
Storage: Seagate - Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM $60
Video card: MSI - GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB VENTUS OC $360
Case: NZXT - H500 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case $70
Power Supply: EVGA - B3 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified $74
WiFI: TP-Link - TL-WN881ND PCI-Express x1 802.11b/g/n $18

He wants a PC that can run games really well (at least for now doesn't need 4k though), and looks nice. He is also learning Unity and designing his own games.

Any problems with this build or advice on it?

Thanks in advance!

What resolution is the TV? The 2060 will be perfect for 1080P at 60Hz.

Is the memory listed on the QVL for that motherboard? Some people have trouble getting Corsair (or other memory for that matter) to run at XMP settings with Ryzen.

What cooler will he be using? The stock cooler is not bad, but he could certainly do better.

Does he plan of overclock? Currently negative voltage offset is broken with MSI boards. This impacts the automatic voltage and automatic overclocking of the X CPUs. It is used to decrease temperature and power draw, allowing the CPU to boost higher. Otherwise the board will do OK with that CPU if he just wants to run it at stock settings.

Thanks for the response.

The tv is 1080P.

He planned on using the stock cooler, and I don't think he was planning on overclocking.

As for the memory, I am not sure. I guess that is something we will need to find out.

Thanks again!

Here is MSI's list of supported memory https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/X470-GAMING-PLUS#support-mem-14

Here is a list of memory that G.Skill has tested on the board https://www.gskill.com/en/configurator?manu=55&chip=3396&model=3398

Corsair has a similar tool here https://www.corsair.com/us/en/memoryfinder?type=motherboard, but you'll have to enter the motherboard yourself.

It has been pointed out that these lists are not perfect, because sometimes manufacturers will use different ICs within a particular SKU, but sticking something on either the motherboard's QVL or the memory manufactuer's compatibility list is still a good idea.

Thanks for these! We went to the corsair site and found memory that was on the board that he wanted. Saved a little money too!

This was really helpful!

Thanks again
