I'm gonna venture it means that he is a farmer, and he meant to type getting the hay in from the fields, as you can't do that if its raining.

This is the case. Sorry for the spelling that is what I get for using a phone to post and not checking the auto correct. I don't farm full time but I do enough to feed the few animals I keep.
