I'm making the jump to SMP, don't ask me why, I am currently running on what is in my sig. I want to migrate as much as I can.

Here is what I have

Antec 550 Truepower PSU
1GB PC3200 Kingston ValueRam
PNY 6800GT
Hauppauge PCI Tv-Tuner Card
2 Hitachi 80GB Sata Drives
1 DVD Drive
1CD-RW Drive
Floppy

I want to go with two of these

or two of these
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-389&depa=1

My first question is which mobo can I use, and second which would be faster, this will mainly be a folding rig, used to encode rarely, but want the ability to do it fast.

I know that the psu is not for servers, but is there an adaptor or something I can use for it to work with this board or no?

Yes, you can get an adapter to use the power supply as an EPS-12V supply, though you will lose some "omph" on the 12V (Antec's EPS-12V 550 has 36A, vs. 30A on the 12V rail for their True 550). Otherwise these are similar supplies.

If you get the Xeons the PC-DL is the MB to get.

I'd get the Xeons. I guess it depends on what you want to do. I still think that 64-bit software is a long time off.

Look in my sig, LAN time, you're more than welcome.

would the 800fsb of those Xeon's work with that board and were is it available. ZZF is out of stock

Yep.

Not sure who has them in stock. Newegg use to carry this MB, but I went to look for it, and its no longer listed.

Poke around on 2cpu.com and see where people are getting theres.

1. Your RAM won't work on an Opteron, they need ECC and reg'd

2. Noconas will not work on the PC-DL, the VRM isn't up to spec and need additional cooling when overclocking. You'll need an Asus NCH-DL ($50 more) or an Iwill DH800.

for the noconas, get the iwill dh800 or the more available ncch-dl by asus...

the psu will work on both as is, but you can get an adaptor made by thermaltake and available at newegg for about $10...

for the opterons, you will need new (registered) RAM

here's a good review of nocona mobos:

Get the Asus NCCH-DL for $250 and the Nocona Xeons for $500/pr. That PS will work with an adptor but don't count on overclocking those processors unless you get a true 500+watt EPS PS with at least 30A 12V rail current. Opterons are great but not the best bang for the buck SMP setup at this time.

{PMS}fishy, Monarch Computer has the PC-DL in stock for ~$190 but you can't run Noconas on it. It still would be a great bang for the buck SMP 32bit platform.
