what will your dad be doing with this PC?

most likely cad work and basic internet usage. Speed is my issue and longevity since he probably wont be replacing anything until things breakdown.

What type of CAD work? I'm wondering if some sort of workstation card might work, but I don't know if you could get one AND a 256gb SSD AND a larger monitor for <$1000.

well mostly looking at cad drawing and tweaking them, zooming in and out alot...

Ok, I didn't know if he was doing heavy photoshop/3D modeling type stuff, where hardware acceleration would help. I did a quick 5 minute part out with the assumption it won't be OCed (low end motherboard and non-K CPU). As of time of posting, this is $966 excluding MIRs, so I dunno if you want a nicer case or maybe look for a 1440p screen (the LG is only 1080p, but IPS which is nice).

Case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147123 Cheap mATX Rosewill, but you can bump it up if you need it

HDD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236404 2TB WD Green, $10 off

Screen - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005495 27" LG IPS $60 off

GPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130814 GT620, 1xDVI and 1xHDMI, $10 MIR

PSU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104183 400w FSP. Heard FSP was good, but this is their low end line. Should be good anyway for a non OCed cpu and low end GPU. $8 off

RAM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104360 8GB Kingston, may bump it up to 16GB if funds allow it. $25 off

Mobo - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128667 GIGABYTE GA-H81M-DS2V

CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116898 i5 4670

SSD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211597 Adata 256GB SX900, currently $70 off.

I don't know if anyone else has any suggestions.

Edit: Sorry, little mistake and since a few people already quoted me I'll own up to it. It's a 400w PSU, but I still doubt the system will draw more than 1/2 that.

thx i shall look into this, really appreciate it!!!

what about getting like 2 tb drives and raiding them raid 1 for some more speed in transfer?

Raid 1 isn't really meant for speed increases. It's not like raid 0 where some data is sent to one drive and the rest is sent to the other. It's just a precaution in case one drive dies, you don't lose all your data.

thought raid 0 was the clone and 1 was stripped, maybe i mixed them up

Right idea, just backwards :D If you want speed, you go with raid 0. If you want survivability, you go raid 1.

Looks like a nice little non OC'd set up there for the money, not familiar with that PSU myself but everything looks good for the money I'd say.

With the SSD running the OS, you wouldn't have to worry about the storage drive so much at any rate.

You could get a couple and RAID0 em if you were worried about speeding up storage, but sure if it's worth the bother there.

Pretty nice deal atm on that AData SSD.
