----------------------------------------

I havent built a pc by hand since the 90's, but I think I built a decent machine to play games on with high setting w/o SLI. 2 years down the road I could go SLI for a hundo or so. Please let me know what you think for my choice and suggestions for OC'ing. I don't want to benchmark w/the best, just lead the way for future gaming.

I currently have a q6600 and SLI EVGA 8800gt's @ 3.2ghz on cheap HD's w/raid 0.
-------------------
I'm expecting quick boot on the SSD, and possibly keeping 1 game on the SSD w/ the OS.

How far can I expect to OC my cpu safely for 24/7 ops while I'm in afghanistan and my wife needs to be able to turn it on and use it?

Basically I want a pimp gaming pc (hence the vid card), that my wife can use 24/7 for school, faceboook, skype, etc.. w/o a hicup. I'll OC the crap out of it when I'm home, but back it down so she can run it w/no problems

Nice parts! You will love the R3F.

Id say you could do a 4.0ghz OC pretty easily with that setup.
161x25 for 4025mhz

I see you got a H50 for cooling. That should be decent with a push pull setup. (preferably not the corsair fans)
There are better air coolers out there but will probably be louder than a H50.

4.0 aint too bad, thanks. I know I didn't go all out on cooling or anything, trying to stay on budget so my wife doesn't kill me :p Yes I'll do push/pull on the radiator.

I appreciate the hint for the 4025 setup. I had forgotten all about the trial & error phase of OC'n. LOL, last night ordering while I was drunk was awesome :p

You could also run a lower multi and more blk to get your ram speed up a bit.
191x21 4011mhz
If your using an 8x multi on ram you would be just under 1600mhz for ram.

I'll give it a shot. Does the board OC easily? I loved my last board (asus P5n32-e sli), i didn't even have to take baby steps with it. I could just go straight to any setting I wanted!

Yeah it OC's very well.

1366 is just sometime picky when it comes to voltages. Not just vcore.
But 4.0ghz should be easy for that chip.

added the 2nd fan cuz I was retarded, and a 12-in-1 card read and stayed under my $2500 budget (barely :p )

Should be able to pimp out diablo 3 whenever it finally releases ;)

I gave the sandybridge a thought, especially for the price difference. But yea, I went for the 1366 for its 6c/12t super power abilities :p

Now to wait 30 days for delivery overseas :(

If an application doesn't take 6/12, then Sandy Bridge wins. :p

Not that 1366 isn't a slouch. Doubt my 920 will bottleneck any GPU for years to come.

True, but I was able to spare the extra few bucks, and I do a bit of hd video editing. it'd be nice to process large 1080p files while playing games at max settings :p

I had the choice on spending the money on the cpu or bumping up one video to a 590.. Tough choice, but I can always go sli in a year or so for a few bucks and the 580's scale very..very well! mid 60's fps in single card, damn near 120fps in 2x SLI (game dependant of course)

That, and I'm counting on the next gen sockets to be 1366!

Either I'm wrong and sandy's are ultimate, or sandy's make a mean profit for intel; and force everyone to switch to 1366 in a year with their 1xxx series 6/8 cores.

I'm banking on the 1366, but either way I avg the odds w/the possibility of coming out on top.

edit***

give me a better build for the same ~$2500, explain why; and I'll return parts if warrented. I've not payed A LOT of attention to high tech reviews... I simply did a search on my spare time on computer parts over the course of a week and made a rash judgement on a 970 (same as a 980 non 'X'). I've done so in the past because it avoids bias and tends to work well for me. (q6600GO w8800GT's in SLI, w 2 budget raptors in raid-0 in late 2007 for ~$2000 w/monitor)

If I made a bad call, please feel free to flame me for it! But I think I made a system for around the same price range with promise since I'm building it piece by piece this time. This case looks BADASS BTW. If my CPU turn out to be a good one, I'll add a nice radiator and attempt my own pluming. If you have OC'd this mobo/cpu combo, please send me your settings to [email protected]

Also please specify your cooling options. I know I'll go nuts and OC what I can on the H50, but after looking at this case, I see I can fit a fatty radiator ontop (240mm), and go like mad!!!

Seriously, thanks to onefstsnake for the OC'n numbers. It helps a lot with setting my baseline. BUT I'm curious to you all's setups and how you've managed to reach 4.5+ Let me know.

P.S. I love you all :p

Well the SB-E are most likely going to be Socket 2011.

SB is nice as you can reach 4.5-5ghz pretty easily. But IIRC you can only have 2x SLI @ 16x speeds. And Sata ports are limited.

As far as cooling goes a 120.2 rad setup should cool that cpu just as good as high end air. 120.3 would be better but Im not sure it would be worth the extra cost.

Im currently running 120.4 worth of rad in my setup, which is cpu only ATM.
Temps stay within ~25*c of ambient. While my wifes H50 is within ~50*c of ambient.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but it's dead. LGA2011 is going to replace it, and we just got pricing on the CPUs, so I'm assuming they're coming out soon. There's Sandy Bridge E coming out soon, which is the new socket I was talking about, and Ivy Bridge, a 22nm? die shrink for the LGA1155 socket.

Simply put, are the programs you're using optimized for 12 threads? If it's not using twelve threads, then you wasted a good bit of money.

I read a page or two about the socket 2011's, but I didn't know pricing had already come out, but there's always something 'better' coming out. Ohwell, it's still a nice cpu :p

To answer your question, no. Not all will utilize 12 threads, I'm not sure if anything I run will. But 12 threads sounds fast :p

I think the most i can run in my case is going to be 120.3, but I'll wait and see what I can pull with what I've got before investing in something fancier.

Build looks good. For future reference, you don't have to guess and bet as to whether a platform will be supported for new CPUs and so on. All the major lines- AMD/Ati, Nvidia, Intel, always have it mapped out for a couple of years ahead of time.

That leaves you $900 for a case, accessories, and cooling. The C300 is a prior gen SSD, the C4 is their latest release. It's cheaper and faster. The C300 is still a great drive though.

Crucial drives are always much faster in reads then current drives, but have extremely slow writes. The M4 can't compete with the OCZ ____ 3/Corsair Force 3/Force GT/Kingston HyperX drives.

bah, I missed the new gen ssd's. It was a purchase while I was drinking some good beer, so I think it came out all right. i admit I left a lot up to reviews off the egg. Hopefully I'll have everything in the mail in a week or two and nothing is broken.
