Why didn't you try Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu ? You get KDE instead of Gnome.
Oh, you said you prefer Gnome too? Doesn't Ubuntu use Gnome?

Installed it but wasn't so impressed. Much prefer KDE3 or Gnome.

Going to back to Gentoo... Ubuntu just feels... weird.

I was a Fedorahead for a while, but I've jumped aboard the Ubuntu train. It's a wonderful OS, I use it 100% at work and quite often at home - no problems at all. I skin Gnome to all hell and it even looks better than Vista. www.gnome-look.org is a wonderful site.

And yes, stock Ubuntu uses Gnome. Xubuntu uses XFCE, Kubuntu uses KDE.

I've tried both but neither feels.. right.

Call me odd but I much prefer building my OS from the ground up. I've never been happy with anything other than Debian or Gentoo. Ubuntu would be nice if it sorted *everything* but if I'm going to fiddle around getting the wireless and VGA working right anyway then I might as well go Gentoo :).

Ubuntu is very nice and polished but not for me.
