Well I just finished playing this game and thorughly enjoyed it so I thought i would place a review on here so that others might be able to enjoy it also. All attempts will be made not to ruin the story of the game because its a good one to say the least.
Game: Pariah

Available for: Xbox and PC
Ok well, lets start off then. Pariah is made by Digital Extremes (DE), which are also the people that have given us good expansion/map packs for the Unreal Tournament series, using the same engine that is employed in UT2004 and many other great games. The game itself comes on 3 CDs and is approximately 2.4gb when installed.
The game sucked me in right from the word go, it has an engrossing story line that, at times, can be a little cliche` with some other first person shooter games that are on the market today but it does have some rather interesting twists in the game towards the end that are rather unexpected (well for me anyway). The gameplay is the same as other first person shooters, fast paced but not fast enough that you lose sight of the story or your objectives in the game. I'm not saying that the game is slow at any point in time but its not super-deathmatch type fast so that you don't forget just what you're supposed to be doing within each mission/objective in the game. This and the fact that the story is both compelling and interesting is what kept be playing the game. One of the downsides I would have to say is that the game is rather short.
In the game you play as the character Jack Mason, who has been transferred to the Biological Threat Assesment Unit because of misconduct. You are performing threat assesments in the field, your latest mission is to escort a subject that has been infect with a virus and it seems someone else has a rather large interest in this subject as well..
The weapons are really a standard first person shooter load out, machine gun, shotgun, gren launcher, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, plasma rifle and one gun that is rather interesting in the way it works called 'Titans Fist'. In the game you can also find little green powerups that you can place into your weapons to ehance certain aspects, although this may seem relatively boring and simple it is actually rather fun. Each upgrade requires a certain amount of those little powerups in order to be achieved, for instance with the machinegun (a.k.a Bulldog) you can place powerups in to enhance the firing speed, lessen the recoil to an extent and to allow armor piercing ammunitions.
Just like any other Unreal Tournament game there is vehicles in this game, although you do not get to drive them often they are fun to play around with when you eventually get in the seat of one of them. They are easy to steer and control, my only gripe about them is firing the vehicle mounted weapons. I realise as you could be moving on a vehicle they would be very inaccurate, but I was standing still and it still took me a while to get a few shots off at and enemy.
Considering the game is built on the Unreal Tournament 2004 engine, DE did an amazing job in optimizing and accomplishing what they did with the eninge. I'm not saying that engine is boring and bland, but it is begining to show its age compared to other engines. However, they did a very good job with the characters being able to portray what they are feeling as well as suprise, astonishment and bewilderment. It may not be the prettiest game on the market today but it is done very well for the engine, the game does employ the havok physics engine so it doesn't really lack in that department. I did however manage to get myself stuck on on or 2 objects that ended up with me having to blow myself up so I could load from a save point.
The saving in the game is done at certain points throughout the game, there is no quick save or quick load function in the game. Although this can be frustrating it adds to the game and makes you take it easy instead of running in like rambo on steriods.
That being said I would whole heartedly recommend this game to anyone that enjoys a single player FPS with a decent storyline, its multiplayer aspect is pretty much standard to other FPS games so I don't think I will go too much into that. I'll leave that out to other people to explore if they decide to get the game.
Sound – 8
Graphics – 7
Storyline – 9
Playability - 8
Overall:: 8.5/10
A great game but a few bugs and quirks stopped it from reaching a little higher.
