Grab a Z97X-UD3H or Z97 Extreme6 instead of the Hero.
I replaced my Hero, it had issues.

If you're gaming 2x4GB of RAM is plenty.

Grab an SSD instead of the raptor.
That's almost as much as an 840 EVO 500GB is on sale.

yea my votes for the Asrock Z97 Extreme6 if your in the ATX FF. cant hurt to have more ram if the price is right. i remember spending more then that on my some nice DDR2-800 2gb kit back in the day. i would highly recommend a ssd for your boot/os drive over the V-rapt.

My max budget it 1K. would you still recommend an SSD if I were not planning on getting another hard drive? I don't think I can afford one right now.

You could easily get a 1tb hdd + 120gb ssd for around $150 or so. Lets you put your most used programs on the SSD while still having 1TB of storage to work with without killing your budget.

here is what i recommend for drives
if your ok with seagate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840 <-1tb 7.2k rpm
or for a bit more
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236625 <- wd black 1tb drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147192&ignorebbr=1 <- samsung PM840 pro, prefere this one over the evo due to the IOPS on random writes. how ever the PM840 evo is still a solid drive to get. with either one you will notice a difference in how fast windows boots/loads up or any programs you up on that drive.

i have done maybe 4 reinstalls on win7+drivers+3rd party apps and web browsers. keep in mind my Vertex-EX has SLC which has a longer life then MLC at the time it was released. OCZ toolbox and other programs still show a 98% life of the drive left.

I might end up keeping the WD black I was looking at because I havn't had any problems with them in my past few builds. I will change out my SSD selection from the EVO to the Pro. Thanks for that suggestion. Still right around my budget price. I can't wait until the 25th to order!
