So recently I build a computer out of some old parts that I plan on giving a lady for free. It's my old Q6600 + rampage formula mobo with 8gb ddr2 ram and a cheap silent asus GTX 210 (because I wanted to keep my 7770).

Anyway, she asked me to implement parental controls because some of her kids like to mess with the computer and look at porn. Parental controls won't stop them from looking at porn, but I put controls on what programs the kids account can use so theoretically they shouldn't be able to use any .exe unless it is checked off on the list or allowed via the admin password.

For the porn, I figured K9 would work, although I've never used such programs. I figure if you want to look at something badly enough there is always a way to circumvent these kinds of internet blocking programs, but at least it will make it harder.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with these sorts of things. Either preventing kids from messing with the computer or blocking porn websites (or at least making it harder with something like K9). I've never used this program or windows parental controls so I'm not sure how secure they are, at least for kids 12~13 and under.

I do not have any experience with those programs, except for getting around them..

Maybe you should change their socks to be located in China.. then that should prevent anything/everything

I have heard good things about K9.. Although I know that if you try to suppress people, they will only find loopholes, sometimes them being dangerous. So to maybe prevent these dangers, have the kids use a Virtual Machine. If something happens to the VM such as a virus, then you can wipe the VM and reinstall, ideally from an earlier clone.

That is my opinion at least. Are the kids just too young or is she afraid of them getting viruses?-Jw.

Windows Parental controls do block some porn sites, but I setup Microsoft Family Safety which allows you more granulated control and blocks porn sites.

Well I won't be maintaining this computer for her, once I give it away it's out of my control. If they break it that's it, I'm not going to be setting up VM's for them.

I might check out Microsoft Family Safety, but K9 seems pretty straight forward and appears to be able to block other things as well.
