Steam [ugh]

I'd like to go a rant about my old [9 years ago to be exact] history with Steam, but rather have a seemingly simple question:

What is meant by Steams message "Steam needs to convert game contents to a new more efficient.." ?

Im reloading HL2 which triggered the message..... [I should be thankful Steam remembered my account status after so long ago].

Its been over one hour ten minutes thus far for said "conversion".....?

What gives?

It's exactly as the message says. It's a conversion to a more efficient format that allows updates to add to existing data rather than requiring some of that data to be re-acquired with update data. Basically it will make future patch downloads smaller in size.
