Suggestion needed for hard drive and RAM upgrade for Gigabyte GA G41 Combo

Hello you wise people,

I have Gigabyte GA G41 Combo mobo in my desktop with two Seagate hard drives and 4GB of RAM (its a local brand), processor is C2D E7500. I haven't overclocked anything in my PC yet. But very soon I want to upgrade my system a bit. I want to add another hard drive from Seagate of 4 TB capacity [Seagate SATA 4 TB (ST4000DM000)]. Can I just add this new hard drive along with the existing drives of 500 GB and 1 TB or shall I upgrade my RAM first?

I want to ask you people that is it OK for me to just add another 4TB hard drive to my system having above mentioned specs and hardware or shall I upgrade my RAM too? I want to upgrade my RAM to 8GB but which model of the above two shall I purchase? I want to use my system at the maximum possible speed allowed by my CPU, mobo and RAM (obviously after I upgrade my RAM too with one of the above). And for that what and how shall I tweak in my BIOS settings (overclock)

First please advice me about the Hard drive and RAM upgrade then I would try to overclock my system to its max values as per you people suggest.

Please only create one thread per topic. I removed your other three threads, moved this one to General Hardware, and added [code][/code] tags to greatly shorten your post and make it easier to read.

If you simply want to add more storage, yes, you can drop the drive in and use it. If you want to make it your main drive, a few more steps would be required.

Memory isn't incredibly picky on what boards it works with. There will be some incompatibility, but it is a lot more rare than back in the day. Motherboards today can automatically set timings so the system at least functions. Either of those sets should work fine. I prefer G.Skill for the quality of their products and support.
 
According to Gigabyte's site, your board shows it supports 1333Mhz ram and only a total of 8gb (2x4gb sticks). You can get 1600 as it is backwards compatible.

Be advised it is not recommended to use both DDR2 & DDR3 on that board. It is not supported. Only use DDR3 or DDR2, but not both.


As for storage, yes you can use the 4tb drive. You have 4 sata ports.

Thanks for the support though. I would like to know which of the two RAMs I stated above would greatly improve the performance? And yes, I am using DDR3 RAM right now but its not a branded RAM. Apart from this, I want to use 1333 or 1600 RAM just because I want to use my system at 1333 (OC) as stated on my mobo's site. My processor is C2D E7500, so can I OC it and the RAM both to work at 1333? If yes then please guide me through this. I read somewhere that we need to enable "XMP" option in the bios for OCing the RAM. But I am not able to find any such settings in my BIOS.

There is just this setting called "Performance Enhance" under "DRAM Performance Control" and its currently set to "Standard" but it has two more options in it as "Turbo" and "Extreme".

Also, there is another DRAM setting as "(G) MCH Frequency Latch" and its currently set as "266 MHz" by default but this too have two more options as "200" and "333".

So have these settings anything to do after I install 1333 RAM from GSkill? Are these settings need to be tweaked as "XMP" is not available in my mobo's BIOS?

Your kind help would surely be appreciated by me. I am totally a noob at OCing and tweaking BIOS!!!!

Both sets of ram will run the same speed (1333Mhz). Installing higher speed ram will not improve performance. You are limited by the bios for that particular board which is max @ 1333Mhz. Only thing that might improve performance is a higher speed cpu like an E8400 for example.

Either set of ram you install, go into the bios and set "XMP" profile. You ram will then run it's rated speed/timings set fourth by the manufacturer.

If your bios does not have "XMP", then you set your timings/settings manually following the ram's specs (timings/voltages).


Your particular board does not have overclocking settings so you will NOT be able to overclock the cpu. Those settings are for overall performance. You can test each setting and see how your system reacts. Be advised that it may cause instability.

All you can do try them and see. Also take a read at this guide .

Aside from this, your are limited by your board. Don't expect much.

I had OCd my cpu earlier. My BIOS has this setting "CPU Host Clock Control". If I enable this option then I can increase the FSB from its stock 266 MHz. Obviously the multiplier is not settable there but yes I had successfully made the CPU FSB from 11x266 to 11x315 but that was the end of it because any more increase in FSB made my system unstable. So, this is what I want to ask, is this instability just because of low-end RAM I am using currently? This RAM shows operating at just 533 MHz. If I install 1333 RAM and OC it to max then would it really operate at 1333? And will it help to increase the CPU FSB more than 11x315? Like 11x330 or 11x350?

Any help from you people would be greatly appreciated as I am the noob in this field.

Today I searched for the suitable memory for my mobo and I found this one " Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL9 @1.5V UDIMM 240-Pin Memory BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00".

So now I have total 3 models of RAM suitable for my mobo. Which one out of these two would perform best according to my requirements?

Last query, Shall I install 2x4GB sticks of any one of these 3 RAMs or just install 1x8GBs stick? My mobo had 2 ports for DDR3 RAM. I want to replace the current RAM sticks (2x2GBs) with the ones I listed in this post.

I wouldn't put anymore money in that machine as it's a dated chipset and you won't get much performance out of it. Your best bet would be to go with a socket 1155 and DDR3. You can then use 1600/1866/2133 ram.

According to your advice I am now narrowing-in on Crucial RAM listed by me above. Actually I found this RAM on Crucial website using its memory finder tool for my specific mobo. Please have a look at these RAM modules too as they are available online here in India on Amazon-India-----

Sorry Sir if I irritated you. I just want to explore the depth of hardware-world with the help of experts like you.

I just tried to OC my system.

I increased the FSB for my CPU (can't increase the multiplier as it is locked to '11'). I set the CPU FSB to 333 (11x333) from its default 266 (11x266). Along with that I just tweaked two settings for RAM. They are "Performance Enhance" and "(G) MCH Frequency Latch". I kept Performance Enhance to default "Standard" (Turbo and Extreme is also available but when I set it to Turbo or Extreme then system got BSOD). And then I set MCH Frequency Latch to "333" from its default "266" (266 and 200 available). And yes, my system ran at 3.66GHz without a fault!!

Again, to push the limits, I set FSB to 340 and rest everything as above and again the system is stable now at 3.73GHz!! No BSOD or no issues. Right now writing this update at OCd 3.73GHZ system.

Again I tried yo increase FSB to 350 (11x350) but it became highly unstable and it got BSOD!!

So, currently the system is at 3.73GHZ without any issues, both the cores are at 40 and 44 degree centigrades.

Are these temps ok (without any stress on CPU)?

And after installing Crucial BAllistix Sport 1666 RAM will I be able to increase the FSB yet more than this?

I will say idle temps are not relevant for the most part, but do believe that to be warm for idle (other variables not withstanding such as higher than normal ambient temps). Its LOAD temperatures, specifically stress testing load temps that matter. Again, check out that guide I linked.

That said, you have a G41 chipset. Its not exactly made for overclocking so you will run into lower limits than with boards that are actually made for overclocking. What that limit is, I have no idea as all boards/CPUs are different.

I have never seen/heard of 1666 ram... are you sure that is what you have?

EDIT: According to your first post you have 533MHz ram (1066 DDR), not 1666. If your memory to FSB ratio is 1:1 you should have no problems reaching 533MHz FSB (stock for the ram). IF the CPU/Board can reach that value. Again, you have a budget board.

Sorry, my mistake. I am asking that if I install Crucial 1600 RAM then will I be able to increase the FSB yet more than 340 of the current OCd CPU? Right now I have this old 4GB RAM (2x2GB) unbranded. It was set to 533 by default when the CPU FSB was at 266 by default. But right now I have OCd my system at 3.73GHz as explained by me above.

Shall I provide CPUZ screenshots of the previous (default) settings and OCd (current) settings?

I would read the guide so you can get the basic concepts and terminology down on what you are doing first...

You will need to make the ratio of FSB to memory as low as it can go. :)

By the way my mobo has 2 slots for DDR2 and another 2 slots for DDR3 memory and currently my RAM is DDR3 (2x2GBS).

EDIT:- My PC became unstable and restarted during a heavy video-conversion at FSB 340!! I jumped back to FSB 333 and everything (including heavy stress) the system is smooth. So this unbranded RAM could jump up to FSB 333 easily then will I be able to increase FSB more than 333 (without system istability) if I install Crucial Ballistix Sport 8 GB (4GBx2) RAM??
