Toshiba just came out with the M780, and I was just wondering if there's a compelling reason to upgrade from the M700.

My M700 has a T8100 and the M780 I'm thinking about has an i7-620M. Is DDR3, + new architecture, + .55GHz and + 1MB cache worth it? Machine is used for CS4, Running at least one virtual machine, MSSQL and the usual office/email/browsing, etc... all at once. Of course, the SSD would transfer over...

The i7-620M will definitely be faster than the T8100. No doubts about that. But is it worth it? That's completely subjective. I would not be willing to buy a brand new $1,800 laptop to replace a perfectly fine and relatively new laptop. I have a Dell with a T8300 that I do some photo editing with, and it's plenty fast for me. If you're a professional and are processing photos all the time, and you have the money for it, then it might be worth it.

Thanks for the reply, juane414.

My main issue is VPC performance.

The upgrade would be pretty inexpensive, as I can get around $1200 or so from the old one and I've found the M780 with the i7-620m for as low as $1600 with 4GB RAM. Since any noticeable improvement will be worth it, I think I'll go for it if the buyer for the old one comes through.

Wow that's crazy expensive!
You can get a 15" clevo with a 5870m and a 720qm for 1500.....
A 17.3" asus g73jh with 8gb of RAM and 2 500gb HDD's...and 5870m for 1550....
And those are ultra high end GPU's and screens...if you want just the CPU you can get much better for cheaper.

I also just bought a barebones 15" clevo and outfitted it with 4gb of DDR3 1333, 128gb SSD, and i7 620m, 1920x1080 screen, 5870m for 1600 shipped.

The M700 series are ultraportable convertible 12" tablet PCs. Apples and Oranges.
