Windows locking up.

I do have a firewall (nVidia came with mobo). I'm jsut about positive it's a BSOD. I got Avast Home! running as my AVS. Any suggestions of change?

[Edit] Does it matter if I have all my drivers insalled?

[Edit 2] Windows runs fine for about an hour and a half to 2 hours, then either freezes (and I have to reboot) or BSODs.

I've installed another copy of XP Pro and it froze up 2 times in under 5 minutes. I don't get an error box. The program, keyboard and mouse just refuse to respond. I'm downloading Prime95 and I'm going to run that. I've ruled out RAM and overheating. Ran MemTest86 for 1 Pass and got 0 Errors. Any ideas?

In post #10 I suggested you download and install the EPC tool, and in post #15 I made suggestions afa using the tool to aid in troubleshooting your lockup problem. I'm still waiting for a response from you as to what the results were. In addition, RJARRRPCGP suggested you might have a virus... but you never responded as to whether or not you ran a virus scan.
I've ruled out RAM and overheating. Ran MemTest86 for 1 Pass and got 0 Errors
Just because there weren't any errors after 1 pass of MemTest, doesn't necessarily mean it's not a memory related issue... MemTest should be run overnight, cycling through all the tests. Read RedDragonXXX's excellent guide on Memtest86+ in the Memory forum here...

How did you rule out overheating? What are you using to monitor temps? Regarding the 7E Stop Error (SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED), the following MSKB articles may be of some help to you...

You receive a "serious error" or a "STOP: 0x0000007E" error message in Windows XP

Stop: 0x7E Error occurs in Kbdclass.sys when you try to shut down Windows XP

"STOP 0x0000007E" error message after you upgrade to Windows XP

In the BIOS start up screen it shows CPU Temperature and System Temperature. My system temps are consistently 33 degrees Celsius. My CPU temerature seems to stay around 39 degrees Celsius.

As I type this I have MemTest86 running and I'll let that run overnight and while I'm at school. I haven't checked for Viruses, but I will do that as soon as I stop MemTest86. I'll run Avast! Home Edition and report back.

I'll definitely check into Captain Newbie's Thread on STOP errors and the other links.

Thank you.

I'm at the EPC Tools: Download page (http://wwwcs.uni-paderborn.de/cs/kindler/research/EPCTools/download.html) and I'm at a loss as to which one to download.

Partial Results:

MemTest86:
Run Time: 17:45:00
Passes: 22
Errors: 0

Viruses: None

I think it just went from bad to worse. The fans are running and the CPU fan is running. Everything looks like it should be, but now it won't even boot up to the BIOS screen.

[Edit] I tried what you said about disabling PerfOS and it booted up once fine, but I didn't know how to check the logs. Now it only boots up to a black screen like the monitor isn't even on eventhough the power light for the monitor is blinking like it's on standby.

tests mean squat.
I had this problem for weeks.
some board dont take well specific componants it is like russian roulette sometime to figure out which is what. Since you ruled out RAM I would get back to it and increase it just in case.
HEAT is generally the problem.
So interestingly the two things you just put aside I would reinvestigate.
Think about it it could be anything.
Mobo ram heat processor.Who knows...
For weeks I had an error after I installed an internal USB card.
I run on that computer W 2000 enterprise server.
I search days on the net googled it etc.to get rid of the stupid thing.Nothing.
I went away for a job for 2 mths when I got back ?!
No mo gone...So go figure it out.

I would rebuild the machine one componant at the time making sure compatibility is prime among those parts.Stay simple keep things simple for now...
This is IT man not an exact science.
Nothing is for sure I learned...

I fixed the boot up problem, but I'm still having problems with freezing up. I tried the EPC Tools and I disabled PerfOS, but now I don't know what to check/do.

Thread revival: This is the third MS XP Professional install. Still having same problems (i.e. apparent random freezes). I'm using Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2. I'm following redduc900's first post (post #6). Here are my error results:

There are no problems under "Problem Devices."

In response to redduc900's second post (post #10)
by redduc900 Open the Registry (Start | Run | Type regedit, and click OK | Expand the following branch...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SOFTWARE | Microsoft | Windows NT | CurrentVersion | Perflib | 009

... and post what the Multi_String Value names are in the RH pane of the 009 Sub-Key.

I follow your directions to finding 009, but I'm confused as to what the Multi_String Value names are. If I could get a screenshot as an example I'd have a clear idea and it would help a lot.
