I could get an Asus r9 290x direct cu II for 309€ (compared to 380€ for a gtx 970) but I'm reading mixed comments about whether or not this PSU can handle it without dying quickly. My system is the following:

Asrock Z67 extreme3 gen3
i5-2500k @ 4.5ghz, max 1.264V vcore, cm 212 evo cooler
2x4gb ripjaws x 1600 MHz
240mm front case fan and 120mm back case fan (cm 912 HAF)
1x 512gb seagate hard drive 5400 rpm
1x Samsung 840 pro 120gb ssd
Asus xonar DG sound card
1x DVD drive
xfx 550w bronze core edition

what are your thoughts? also what do you think about the Asus model, I read that the heat pipes don't make proper contact so the vrm runs really hot (over 100 degrees Celsius), is this a problem?

thanks in advance

As long as you dont try overclock the R9 290x too much you should be fine. With the 2500k at 4.5 figure you're around 130w and the R9 290x is about 300w.
