Should I really install xp sp 1?
I intend installing xp, directx 9.0b and then the latest nvidia drivers. Right?

SP 1 will be needed if using USB 2.0 and firewire...I think...but definetly for USB 2.0...and I think you have to have SP1 for DX9...but not 100% sure on that...

I'm not sure about nforce drivers. Should they be installed after sp1?

Yes. I usually install in this order:

OS
Updates/Service Packs
Chipset drivers
Video drivers
