i dont use em.. and find them unncessary.. they normally tend to add a degree or two to your overall temps.. the only thing they provide is a peace of mind.. but if you have a steady hands then do without them
 
Shims are only for AMD processors right? Will they help if you move your comp around a lot and have a heavy hs?
 
I doubt they would help when moving your machine. Once installed your HS had better be secure. The only benefit they are supposed to add is to ensure you do not crush the cpu more when mounting your HS. Just apply firm EVEN pressure when mounting your HS and I don't think a shim is needed.
 
The PC I built for my parents came with a Tt shim and it didn't make a difference in temperature. I sold it on Ebay.
