movie making software?

This is more of a two part question:

1. are there any good free movie making software better than Windows movie maker? A few features WMM seems to lack is: its inability to play quicktime movies and also zooming (perhaps i just haven't figured it out)

2. is there a program that will convert .mov files to .wma or something playable in WMM?

There are quite a few applications that will edit movies, and pretty much the cheapest of them would be a better choice than Movie Maker.

From lowest cost to highest, off the top of my head:
