I am buying a new laptop from dell and im trying to decide if I need xp pro or not. I don't think I need it but am not sure. Its a Intel 2ghz duo Core processor. I heard that since its a dual core cpu I should buy xp pro is this true. I will also be connecting to some wireless networks at school also if that matters

Windows XP Home doesnt support SMP, So if you wish to use the Dual core portion of the laptop XP pro is definately recommended.

Wrong, XP Home or MCE will work with Dual Core just fine. They (MSFT) made the licensing based on Physical Sockets. So a DC Proc is only one socket, so it will work fine. The only time Pro is of any benefit is Mulitple Processors, (more than one socket), or if you are connecting to a Domain Controller.

I wasnt saying it as a licensing aspect. I dont believe Home supports SMP which includes dual core, not just dual proc. so you wont utilize the full CPU.

What is smp. I definitly want use of the dual cores. I will be using applications such as maya that can take advantages of the dual core cpu.

You are wrong. Dual cores have been tested on Windows XP Home and work just fine. SMP refers to more than one actual CPU not core.

Maximum Physical Processor Limit/Maximum

Windows XP Home Edition 1/2
Windows XP Professional 2/4
Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition 4 /8
Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition 8/16
Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition 32/32

I'm pretty sure WinXP home will work and that I've seen a couple AMD Dual-Cores come in to remove some infections. There does seem to be a lot of conflicting stuff though doing a google search. But I am almost positive I had NO ISSUES to what I recall. Please correct me if I am wrong.
