One of the family computers (the blue one in my sig) developed a major fan problem. The fan kept making grinding noises on an even interval, it wasn’t bad at first but it got progressively worse. So I decided to switch out the fan. This is really my first mod to a power supply so i was a little nervous.
Note all of the pictures are very large so these are links to 2MB pics!!!
I’ll start at the beginning:
First I removed the power supply from the computer. It’s an HP, and their mounting system is very stiff so it required some pushing, in the picture it’s in the upper left corner.

Next after I got the power supply out it looked like this: (The left side actually faces you when it is installed in the case)

I decided upon opening the power supply case to use the fan that says powmax in the picture above. Next I pulled the old fan out and put the new fan in. The connection is just 2 wires soldered to a board so there is nothing complex here. You can see the new fan in the lower right hand corner in the following picture: (sorry about the bad focus the cameras new and I don’t really know how to use it)

Once the new fan was screwed in the cover went back on and it went back into the computer. I plugged all of the connectors back in and fired it up, and there is no problem at all, I’m actually using it to write this post. I decided to do one last thing. I made a video of how badly the fan turns, and I compared it to the NMB in the first picture, you can get it here (5MB)
