I need advice on which cpu to choose to go into my new build

So far:

Buffalo FireStix 2GB (2 x 1 GB) DDR2 800 PC2-6400 SDRAM
EVGA 8800GTS Superclocked 640MB
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe Motherboard

Which cpu would be best to go with that lot.

Get a intel E6420 with L2 Cache - 4 MB and overclock or get a E6600

Ive been told if you have good ram and motherboard get the E6420. And if you have crap ram get the E6600.

Is a L652B261 a good branch for the E6420
PACKDATE: 03/26/07

Any help please

Well im not going to spend huge amounts. ive heard about bottlenecking because i have a good graphics card but if i was to go for the E6420 would that be good

whats the multiplier on the e6420 because some people myself included cap out at 400fsb 2.8ghz on x7 milti on e6300 go for p5b deluxe if it has low multi.

i would go for the e6420, no doubt about it. unless you are going to be using extreme cooling, there is really no need for a e6600, except if you go with a 975 board.

a friend of mine just built a system with a e6420 and 8800gts...we had him up and running at 3ghz the first night on the stock cooler, totally orthos stable.

any mobo capable of 450fsb can top out a e6420.

*edit* HAHA, i should pay more attention. just noticed you are going to be using the p5w-dh (a 975 board, and you might run into FSB limitations on it). unless you are planning on running Crossfire down the road, i would go with a solid 965 board, like the p5b-dlx/commando. these can do excess of 500fsb, so you would not have to worry about them getting in the way of your overclock with a e6420.

I'd go with the e6420 because with that board you should be able to run at least a 450 FSB. Higher FSB nets better results then lower FSB and higher multi.

that isn't a cap on your e6300, it is a cap on your motherboard. 975 boards can take a lot of work to get past 400fsb sometimes.

^^ like i said. 975 boards can't do crazy fsb like 965 can. doing 450fsb on a pw5-dh would be pretty tough, might take volt mods.

i dont want to get the ASUS P5B-Deluxe because ive heard it doesnt have good onboard sound. What can i expect to reach with the ASUS P5W DH using a e6420.

And finally what branch code is good for the E6420

i'm sure the audio on the p5w-dh is about the same as on the p5b-commando. they are the 2 top end boards from asus, 975/965.

i've used the onboard sound on mine, it worked fine for me. if you are a true audiophile, i would suggest an add on card either way. ;)

with a p5w-dh, you could do 400*8=3200mhz. beyond that is a gamble. 425fsb for 3.4ghz would probably be the UTMOST you MIGHT hit without a LOT of hassle.

codes on the e6420's are all alike. just grab the cheapest one IMO.

ahh im stuck between the Asus COMMANDO P965 and ASUS P5W DH Deluxe now

if you look the diff boards up on the asus.com site, you can see that they do in fact all have diff audio (p5w-dh/p5b-dlx/commando).

i really don't know much about the differences, or what is better than what. but i can tell you in my experience the audio on my p5b-dlx is just fine (i only have a 2.1 speaker setup up mind u).

After reading this i dont think ill be getting the Asus P5B Deluxe

why not grab a audigy for super cheap? it will be better than any onboard you get anyways.

i'm sure you can find people who have bad things to say about pretty much all mobos and their onboard sound.

in most cases
965 boards give higher fsb than 975
so if u plan to get 6420, take 965 board and fast memory u ll have speed rig

6600 take 975

I only plan to hit 3GHZ im not a person to push the E6420 to its limits

You only need to run the E6420 at 375 FSB for 3 gig or 400 FSB for 3.2 gig. Almost any motherboard, including the 975 chipset ones will do 400 FSB. So, if you really want the Asus P5W DH, then by all means get it. Match it up with an E6420 and a pair of DDR2-800 RAM, slap some good cooling on that sucker and crank it up to 400 FSB. That would be a great system.
