Ahh, alright.

I ended up buying a Vostro 1500 with a 2.2ghz Core 2 Duo, 2gb of ram, XP, an 8600M GT, and a 160gb 7200RPM drive (bleah 5400 is too much of a downgrade) with nothing preinstalled for $1,071.

If need be, I'll buy some more ram from Memory X.

Thanks guys. :p

You're gonna love it :)

FYI if you're going to game on it, grab drivers from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com. I used the 169 series to play Crysis, which it does nicely on low settings. Also, if you want to get a little more performance out of it (and have supported driver versions) rivatuner will overclock the 8600M GT. I have mine running at 600 gpu / 500 mem / 1200 shader.

Oh and I used 8kfangui to set all fans to high speed at default, to keep things nice and cool :)

Did the fan speed increase raise the noise level at all? I don't like having a burning laptop sitting on my lap but at the same time I don't want a vacuum in my lap either.

It's not a vacuum, but it is louder for sure. You can change the speed manually in that program I think, maybe even by rpm, not sure. I wanted drive and card safety over all else, so for me it was perfect.
